Keep killing my gearbox

I have a question about the sr20det gearbox. I am on my 3rd gearbox since april. In april a fit a gt28 bb turbo, nismo 555 injectors aswell as other supporting mods. I then had the car mapped for 18 psi boost pressure. I done fifteen 1/4 mile runs last weekend and once again detroyed another gearbox 3rd gear and shaft bearings this time.

My car was power tested 2 weeks ago and made 362whp which equates to a healthy 400hp to the fly. What power outputs are standard sr20det gearboxs good for.

I dont really want to shell out for an os giken gear set as they retail at around 2k gbp

Does anyone know of any gearboxs that are interchangable with the sr box eg skyline 300zx.

Any info on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

yeah i heard the sr trans can handle like 500whp. but my freind did blow his tranny and it was due to bad motor mounts which allowed the drive train to kinda flex or something. so is could be a structure issue and not the tranny itself. just my thoughts

I am currently running 362whp using a gt28rs bb turbo , nismo 555 injectors, walbro fp, greddy fmic, greddy e01 boost controller, 3" exhaust turbo back, blitz sus induction kit.

The car was live mapped for 18 psi boost pressure.
I am using an act 6 puk paddle clutch rated at 450 ft/lbs could this clutch be killing my gearbox?

This is my third stock gearbox since april. Just had another recon box fitted and took it for an hours sideway action and this box has started whining.

Guess i'm gonna have to invest 3k into a sequential quaife gearbox.

invest 11k in a hks gearbox, and never use your clutch pedal again! lol. Like what is it doing to the gearbox? is it grinding the gears? are you launching too hard? what seems to be going on?

Dont really want my gearbox to be worth more than my car 11k for the hks box
Dont think the tranny would last to long without using the clutch lol.
Basiclly the same thing happens every time. the box starts off with a whining sound that gradually becomes worse then pop, either 3rd or 4th gear shafts shreds a couple of teeth and usually the metal fragments usually do a sh*t load more damage. Mind you i have mastered a 5k launch on sticky tarmac.
The problems i am encountering is due to me ramming double the hp that nissan intended the sr20det gearbox to transmit.
I am now starting to realise that there is no cheap fix around the sr20det gearbox problem.
Looks like my credit card is getting quite a battering this month.

How much torque are you producing? What type of tires were you running when you were at the track. The stock sr tranny is only rated to 40nm of torque, or roughly 300ft/lb. If you are launching hard and getting a lot of traction then it could be the culprit. Currently I am hitting 360ft/lb in my stock tranny that has held for two years now. I have taken it to the track quite a few times. Sr trannies are just kind of iffy like that.

Don't waste money on the HKS mission. If you don't use your clutch then your overhaul rate needs to be every 3,000KM. If you drive it with the clutch then it is 25-30,000km. I have a few friends that have them in their cars. They say the overhaul cost can range from $150-3500.

You can also fit a CA18 mission onto your sr. Just change the bell housing on the CA to SR. A friend of mine did that and he never blew a mission again, he blew the half shafts on the left hand side every other time he went to the track.

You can also check out this group below. They are based out of Australia. All of their prices are AUD, convert it to USD. A few people have this mission and say that it has outlasted their HKS mission.

The engine is currently producing 335 ft/lb. At the moment im using goodyear eagle f1s 265/35/18.
I am getting pretty good launchs at 5k rpm do you think 265's are to grippy for drag strip sticky tarmac?
I have a ca18det motor in my garage with a hole in no 1 piston complete with a manual gearbox.
Will the ca18 transmission mate up to the sr20 bellhousing? Will the shifter line up where the sr20 one did. Are the ca18 trannys really better than the sr ?Did your friend destroy his driveshaft with the ca18 tranny installed?

Is there any other modifications needed for this conversion?
Any advice on this conversion would be greatly appreciated.

Well theres your problem, Uber traction tires with high RPM launches. That'll toast your gear box in no time. The only stock trannies I know that can take that abuse is an AWD DSM tranny as long as the clutch isn't dumped on launch.

you're kidding right? DSM's require a new transmission after every launch..

if you keep killing your transmission, look into buying one, and getting it shot peened and cryo treated, it may hold up a lot longer, in fact, i think JGY will sell you one already done for not too much money.

I have a friend running 12 flat on a stock unrebuilt tranny and he's never had a problem with it.
