need some tech advice. here's my delema, i have a SR20det blackj top motor with the
v-tech timing(slanted coil pack cover), and i have a funny feeling my BOV is messed up.
when i first got this car i had noticed that the return line that comes from the BOV and goes back into the intake after that mass air sensor ( in turn makes it a closed system, no open atmosphere venting) was not hooked up, strange. upon working on the motor abit longer i noticed that if i disconnected it (open to atmosphere) idle was fine, give it some gas and it rand like crap, seemed like ti was running to rich. I consoled a few freinds that have a sr2det and i got a few "huh" and "dunno". if i hate off the hose at idle and rock that throttle body i can feel a small amount of air from the exit port, this i why i think it may be on it's way out but i could be wrong. and i say this ony because i have only seen that aftermarket BOV's such as that HKS SSBOV and some others, what really stumps me is, granted most of my friends have a intercooler system, i don't see why the princable would not be the same as in my case. i still have that stock intercooler which is just the smalller version of the ones being sold aftermarket. If some one have has any ideas, needs more info or tell me i'm seeing things, ill be watching the thread
The stock bypass valves are kind of crappy to start with, and if it was leaking boost really bad it would cause the symptoms you describe. I would invest in an aftermarket bov, if you plan to recirculate - the forge bov is a great one...or if you plan to vent it, most of the big names make good ones - I have a plain old jdm hks bov on my 240sx right now. It has a nice whoosh sound without being too annoying on long drives.

The OEM BOV return line is supposed to hook into the intake system between the MAF and the turbo intake; if it's disconnected, try hooking it up to see if it corrects your problem.
Air leaking out the exhaust port of the BOV at slight throttle is not a good sign. You can replace the BOV with another OEM unit or go with a custom BOV that blows out to the atmosphere.
right i have had the hose hooked up to the intake, what i don't get is that if i get a aftermarket BOV, say, HKS for example why is there a diffrence in the fact that a large intercooler can be vented to the atmosphere? would it not create that same problem? being a closed system i can understand the concept of the fuel air ratio issue, but the fact that the air is vented out rather than enclosed, being this seemes to be where the problem lies, but long story short, a aftermarket open vented BOV should not be a problem, right?
The problem in your case is a leaking BOV, not whether it's open vented or closed loop. Understand that the BOV only opens when you're throttling down after full boost to protect the turbo.
If you like the noise of an open vented BOV, get an aftermarket unit, otherwise if you like a quiet operation, stay with an OEM.
We did this on my friend's 03 jetta...we actually stretched the bov spring, which caused it to close at idle, and open properly without throwing a service engine soon code..

ok what i ment by the last post was that i take more force to on the spring to open the valve. springs are rated in pounds, 10 LB spring, takes 10 LBs of force to open. and as far as a aftermarket BOV i won't have the valve opening at any other time other than when i shift.
