flywheel lightening??

just bought a used oem flywheel off ebay for my future clutch job on my SR20DE.

i have a couple questions about lightening the flywheel.
how much can i take off the flywheel without causing problems.
i heard the stock flywheel weighs 19 lbs., and an install on NPM said they took 4 lbs. off.
Project 200SX SE-R Turbo (clutch install)

is that pretty safe? do you think it would cause a problem with adjustments in the clutch cable? is there enough adjustment in the clutch cable to compensate for what is taken off the flywheel?

also, i'm thinking about taking the flywheel to a local machine shop to get it resurfaced/lightened. should they just remove metal from the area that contacts with the clutch surface or can they remove it from all over to achieve a 4 lb. loss.
has anybody had any problems with incorrect resurfacing of the flywheel, or is it a pretty straight forward process?

i didn't see any dowel-pins on the flywheel on the NPM install. can you take the old ones off and put in new ones. because i might as well do that too if possible while i'm in there.

thanks guys,
dan

The machinist will take material off the back of the flywheel as well as the front to lighten it. Doing so is "safe" to the point of not weakening the structure of the flywheel. Mate of mine lightened a stock flywheel by a similar amount and has been driving on it no problems for over 30K miles.

Dowel pins can be removed and replaced, they are only case hardened (not through hardened) pins so they're usually either pulled out, or drilled out if they snap off. They will need to be removed to properly surface grind the flywheel face.

If you take the flywheel to somehwere that knows what they're doing, you should have no problems.

There should be enough adjustment in the stock cable setup to compensate for the very small amount of material that will be taken off the face. If there isn't, you can remove the bracket that holds the cable to the gearbox, and slot the mounting holes to move the bracket closer to the firewall to gain a mm or 2 of extra movement if absolutely necessary.
