should i clean the transmission?

should i clean the transmission because today i took out my transmission and the clutch was all fried up...the pressure plate was gone....inside my transmission its all black...do i need to go ahead and clean it? if so what kind of cleaner would work on it?

While it's not really necessary, I like to clean parts I remove from the car. I would use an engine degreaser and work it in with a short-bristle brush. Then hose it off. Do the outside also. I know no-one will see it but you'll know it's clean under there.

Other considerations - causes - of your clutch problem

You didn't ask - but will assume that you need to know why the clutch fried!
Do you have a leak in the seal at the input shaft of the transmission? Cleaning the inside is nice to do, but if the problem is a leak, then you will do nothing but burn up a new clutch and pressure plate. If you still have the transmission open, please consider a new seal at the input shaft.

Also, if you are going the "after-Market" route with your clutch replacement - go first class (or the best that you can afford). A good clutch assembly is an excellent investment for a hard driver!
