I'm brainstorming on the clattering sound some of us get at startup after a cam install.
I've got a really nifty toy - it's like a stethascope that doctors use, only it has a metal pin at the end instead of a circle. Anyway, with my toy, the clattering noise comes from the timing chain area (duh!).
Anyway, I'm thinking that the chain is jumping up and hitting the chain guide. I'm going to take off my chain guide to see if it clears up. I will also check on the tension of the chain to make sure that it cant get any better.
I'll let you know what happens. I.E. - wether it goes away, or if I slip a cog and destroy my motor. Also, if you all have any suggestions, please post up!
By the way, arent the 98 sr20's missing the chain guide/guard?
Replace the timing chain tensioner and timing chain guide if you haven't replaced them already. They clatter may go away with that. I hope it will, cuz I have the same problem as you do, and I will be replacing the stuff withing the next few days.

Yeah... I tried replacing it, no good. I really think it's an oil pressure issue. not enough oil pressure that is. Someone needs to bite the bullet get into the bottom of the motor and replace the valve on the oil pump. Many other makes of cars have this problem of that valve sticking. Too late for me, my motor just blew
For all you thinking of doing the same - DONT. Pulled it, and started the car (after re-assembly, of course) and it jumped a cog. The car wont run now. DAMIT, I find everything out the hard way. By the way, even with the guide off, it still clatters.
Anyway, for my current problem. How do I fix the timing jump?!

That really sucks. But here's the thing. It'n not the chain guide! Why would it be. It's supposed to be there and it doesn't move. So obviously it's something that's causing slack in the chain. ie oil pressure. Does your motor just turn and not start? You probably need to find TDC and re time your motor if you didn't screw something else up.
Remember what I told you, the chin can only slip on the intake cam. So pull your #1 plug out and find TDC on the compression stroke. Then put your intake cam back where it belongs, it should naturally slip into the right timing, at least mine did. Anyway, we're three for three on the tensioner not solving our startup clatter. I noticed slack in my chain when I put my tensioner in, so I'm going to have to say that a new chain might solve the problem. But I won't be the one to find out, because I'll be swapping in a DET instead, and I'll be putting a new chain on it before it goes in.
