Unhappy Disappointing run

Last night I ran into fellow board member gb95ser and met up w/ some other guys to race our cars. gb95ser smoked me by about 1 car length (I also give him props. for beating a Civic-T and Integra LS). His set up is CAI, exhaust, 91cam, and JWT ECU. My car just felt hella slow. I don't race all that often so my launches are nothing to brag about but I'm going to go check all the normal causes---plugs, wires, and dis. cap. I was thinking our cars should be pretty even since he has the ECU/no header while I have no ECU/header. Anything else I should be aware of?

what did you race up to? (mph)
I think given the ecu (higher rpm) along with the cam he could pull on you a bit...but it all depends on the mph

We ran up to 70-80mph, I was paying more attention to the tach than the speedo....I've redlined in a couple of races and quickly learned my lesson to pay more attention

i think it would be interesting to see if you guys rung out third. before i put my header on i had basically your friend's mods and after i put the header on i noticed a little loss in low end torque. so maybe in the first two gears the smaller header helped him get out ahead but im willing to bet you would have been gaining on him towards the top of 3rd into 4th

best thing for both of you to do is go to the dyno

Well tomorrow I'm going to go through all the usual suspects. I already added some fuel injector cleaner to see if that makes a difference. I'm also planning to clean out the throttle bottle and check plugs and wires. Maybe it'll help.

Angry

Now I have a damn check engine light

I cleaned out the throttle body and the intake and now I'm getting a crappy check engine light right when I start up the car. The car runs fine but this is annoying. All the sensors are in correctly, the only thing I can think of the is the residual chemicals from the cleaner fucking w/ the exhaust. Any suggestions?

If it doesn't go any I'll have a shop diagnosis it when I get my cam put in next week.

EDIT: left the battery unplug for the night and the check engine light is gone.

I did a search and found mixed results concerning the injector cleaner. A lot of people said to never use cleaner at all, some said only do it every 30,000 miles, others said only to use STP. The joys of internet forums, everyone has an opinion I used BG 44k, has anyone heard any problems before?

A check engine light can be nothing or something serious. Unhook your battery for about a min and hook it back up. Tha'll clear your comuters memory and if there really is something wrong your light will come back on shortly after you restart your car. If it doesn't come on it could have been just from you tinkering with your engine. If it is something just run a diagnostic on it and look in your code book to see what's really wrong.

Thanks for the props. I just got done with a full tune up plugs/cap/rotor/oil/300zx fuel filter so i know you pain . You might also think about you have a WAI and I have a CAI, i think the difference in those is like 4hp. Ahh well dont get down on yourself your car did well, I just can race pretty well. As long as we beat those honduahs eh? See ya bro

You can use redline injector cleaner, it doesn't have the chemicals that the others do to wear out the rubber in our injectors.

that 'techron' stuff can't be used because it casuses wear.

You've got the order backwards... don't just discard a check engine light and assume it's a mistake and then take it seriously the second time! Check what the MIL is for the first time and be done with it. When you grab the code, you can try to fix the problem and *THEN* reset it (and it's easier to reset it using the hole in the back of the ECU - once you've done it once with the ECU pulled away from the mounting point, you'll be able to do it without pulling anything!)
