I checked with a local auto parts store for a replacement starter. They listed 2 different starters, one just a standard starter and the other a "gear reduction" starter.
I don't know what this means, can anybody help a brutha out?
One's a Mitsubishi and One's a Hitachi. You want the Mitsubishi, it's a better starter, apparently doesn't have the squealing issues that the other one does. When I get home I'll look in my FSM and let you know which one is the gear reduction and which one isn't.

Okay according to my FSM SR20DE powered cars only had reduction gear starters. The # for the mitsubishi is M1T72985A and the number for the Hitachi is S114-701B.

Cool! Thanks for the help.
So you're saying that the squealing problem is common even on fairly new ones if they are the Hitachi's?

That's what I was told. I have the hitachi in my car and when I was doing my clutch, clutch cable, motor mounts, driveshafts, etc. I pulled the starter out and took it apart and greased the shit out of the planetary gears and put it back together. I'm pretty sure it's held up but since my timing chain tensioner makes noise upon start-up I can't really tell for certain unless I listen carefully, which I don't.
