sudden loss of mpg's

ok so i was at the car wash and got water all over my engine. i go to start it up and it dies. so i wait a 1/2 hour then start it up and its fine. then the next day i start getting surge in power and bog downs in power. also i went from 25mpg to 20. so i figured it was bad plugs so i replaced them. i also inspected my wires and they are fine. so what else could be causing this. i am figuring this is all some how related to the water or its one big coincidence. so could the water have damaged any thing that could cause this like o2 sensor or messed up the distributor somehow. (there is a spark coming from the distributor and its getting to the plug i just don't know if its at the right time or not). so please help
