01 Nissan Sentra SE engine replacement

Sup, guys and girls I am completely new to Nissan motors and just happen to have bought my sister in law a 01 Nissan Sentra SE for $1500. The only catch is the engine overheated on the person who had it before and may either have a blown headgasket, cracked head, and possibly damaged piston rings. My initial idea was to just go buy an engine for it and throw the old one away keeping only the sensors and stuff that can be used later. As of this weekend I have gone crazy looking for a motor to no avail but I have been asking for a 00-01 engine.I did a compression test in hopes to maybe just changing head gasket will get the car going, cylinder #4 had 60psi, #3 had 0psi and thats pretty much were I said forget about even changing the head gasket. I also found one spark plug with water on it when I took it out (the one in cylinder #3).

Will an older sr20de(I believe is the engine I need) work ?
Anyone know some where in florida where they have these motors?
How much should I expect to pay? so far I've gotten prices from 500-800
Do you guys think I should still try changing the head gasket even though I got one cylinder marking 0 psi (obviously I will be taking the head to a machine shop to be straightened out)?

I have one last place that said they have the motor for 550 I may be buying it and installing this weekend coming up.

The reason you're having so much trouble is that you have a roller rocker SR20 and they only made those a few years. They are nice engines but not as easy to come by and if you can get ahold of one for 550 dollars then I'd go for it. Do a compression check on it as well as these engines are usually a little more costly and if it checks out, take it.

I'm pretty sure that for an OE crossover, you'll have to go with the RR engine, not the old skool SR's.

actually you should have no problem with the older sr20s. i've seen plenty of people with p11s and b15s that swapped the rr sr20 for highport DETs

Well i have installed the engine in the car turned on like a charm runs like a brand new motor but i am having two problems one i have the service engine light on, two the car wont move !! I put the car in reverse, drive, any gear and it wont budge at all. The reverse light wont even go on tomorrow morning im verify that the cv joints are all the way in, verify i put the flywheel to torque converter screws (its an automatic) which pretty sure i did. will a bad tranny sensor cause this ? The shifter cables are moving the selector level on the tranny fine no issues there.

1) do the 00-01 have a self diagnostic? if it does how do i activate it? i've read like two ways but they seem to all apply to older models one involving the accelerator pedal, the other turning on and off the car waiting for the airbag light to go off.

2) Will a tranny off a g20 fit ?

3) is it possible my torque converter is screwed?

4) Will a tranny sensor cause my tranny not to go into gear?

Thanks for the responses guys I bought the motor by the way for 620

Nobody has any suggestions why the car wont move ? the tranny was fine before from what i was told the car only had a blown head gasket and was stopped because of that. Could i have installed something wrong ?

well I thought I would do an update on my situaton I finally got the car going by replacing the transmission. I replaced it with a 02 G20 transmission I had no clue the 2002 g20 fit the 00-01 sentra se hope thats a helpful fact . It cost me roughly 481 with taxes but most I saw wanted 500 w.o/taxes.

The reason why the old tranny might have not worked was because I may have forced the oil pump in the tranny. When i installed the tranny and went to crank the car the motor wouldnt rotate. Found out the torque converter moved front and got jammed with the motor. When I installed the new one I made sure the torque converter hadnt moved at least 20 times. So the car now moves!! but !! lol I got a few engine codes went to my local autozone and borrowed there diagnostic tool.

It is an automatic g20 2002 transmission very hard to find and took me awhile to find it at that price. I had one fool ask me for 750 !!! I just found it by sitting down and calling every junkyard possible that i found in the yellowpages book.

Alrite guys so finally i get rid of the check engine light by changing all the damn sensors it told me to: knock, egr, iat, second O2 sensor, iac. So the car shows no check engine light now but it has a nasty stalling problem when the car comes to a stop it even turns off at times. The car also has a high pitch sound coming from the fuel pump i believe. It is also throwing out a funny smell from the exhuast with light black smoke . when i press the gas quickly the black smoke is more visible. this is the only thing holding me back for this car to be in perfect working order. the car idles fine for a bit and then the rpm starts droping then goes back up to normal to a normal idle a lil later again back down really low and it sometimes shuts off. could it be my map sensor or maf sensor and not throw a cel light ? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

ok so i went to check to see if its the maf sensor. i disconnected it and turned the car on. the car now idles at a lil above 1000 rpms but its stable it does not die unless i try to drive off on it and i cant rev it over 3k rpms but im guessing its becasue the computer goes into some kind of safety mode since that sensor isnt on .

So could this be it and where can i purchase it for a good price ?

Will one from a 1.8 work ? and what year would i have to use

I would start calling around to salvage yards to see if you can find one.

Sorry it seems like you really haven't gotton much response here. Your car is a little too new compared to the issues I'm used to or I'd help more.
