I have a '92 Nissan Sentra. I have had issues with 5th gear not staying in under power. 5th gear has been replaced 3 times and the entire transmission recently. The transmission change did not help and just like clock work, after the typical number of miles, 5th gear is popping out again. To date, I have had no help from Nissan or any of its dealers in diagnosing the problem. In fact, it was a dealer that "fixed" the transmission the first 2 times. I do not rest my hand on the gear shifter while I drive and I have been babying 5th gear when I shift but to no avail. I am anxious to know how to fix this. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
5th gear popout is a common problem with that tranny. I'd bet the dealer that fixed it didn't replace all the parts they should have. If they only replced the "easy" side of the gearset, it will start popping out again. I know this for a fact becasue I did just that and the car started popping our of gear 3000 miles later. I'll try to dig up a link to a page showing everything that must be replaced, and I'll also tell you what they probably didn't replace. I'd take it back and demand they do it again for free and replace EVERYTHING on the list. Who was the dealer that did the work?
Also, what did you do with the tranny they replaced?
Tom

I had that problem. Doing 90 and it poped out lukily i was quick with the throttle. Anyway it cost me 450 pounds to have it replaced. After it was replaced it did it again. They took it back and fixed and ever since then it has been fine. all it is is that the teeth on the 5th Gear cog have either broke away or warn down. So it is not connecting properly. It needs to be replaced.
dude same problem here. check out the link below they should be able to help lots. browse around in the problems section, its right there for easy finding.
It can be the shift fork thats causing the problem as well, have they changed that? I had the exact same problem. Took the tranny apart, no problem with the gear itself, but the shift fork was worn, after I changed it, no more popout.
Replace your fifth gear cog in your tranny. The same thing happened to me. It cost me 450 pounds should be around the same in dollars. I was doing 90 when mine popped out and that was damn scary. If it is your motor mounts the same thing will happen in 3rd and 1st so i think its the fifth gear cog.
