Main Bearing Cap Position?

How should the main bearing caps be installed? Right now, if I am standing on the flywheel side of the motor looking at the bottom end, I can read 1-5 cap numbers. Should I be able to read them from the flywheel side or timing side? As it sits now, the bearing notches are both on the same side and line up with each other.

Well, the car is running and everything seems ok. The owner was too lazy to check the cap orientation but maybe he got lucky lol. Now... he says the caps looked like they could only go on one way. Meaning one end of the cap was thicker/longer than the other and would not install straight if he tried. Is he correct in saying so?

The Caps are all linebored together with the block so hopefully there wouldn't be too much difference bewteen them but it sounds like tou were lucky enough for that little difference not to matter. On your engine, the T-chain side will always be #1 and the numbers will increase as you make you way to the flywheel,

Sounds like he just wasn't paying attention or coming up with excuses.
