Putting the SR in timing mode.

Okay.. I know where to look to find out how.. but over my time since I got my car Ive seen ATLEAST Three different ways to do this and now Im not even positive mines set right.

From what I did before.. drove around so my engine was warmed up.. reved my engine 3 times past 3K (not really letting it drop to idle speed) then disconnected the TPS. It Looked like it was fine using a timing light, but Im not positive because the first time he did it (neither of us knew how to put it in timing mode) the 0 BTDC was moving slightly around because all he did was disconnect the TPS. Though we only went for 15 BTDC because of it. After learning about how to put it into timing mode I did the rain dance and reconnected the light.. it said 17 and wasnt moving around from what I could see.

But why do I keep reading different ways of doing this? I just read "make sure to not turn off the engine" yet from a link off se-r.net they said rev, turn off the engine then disconnect the TPS. And again on this forum.. "disconnect the TPS then rev." So a 100% answer.. WHAT IS IT?! I havent had any problems with knocking or anything.. using 92 octan, I just want this done right. Is there any 100% way to know its in timing mode? If I have a scanner connected should the RPMs not be moving at all? I know if you idle normally they will be moving around, though VERY slightly, easy to tell with a scanner.
