I've had b13s for years now mainly as a car to fend the winters here in Pittsburgh PA. I finally fell into a SE R with a good body and bad motor. (perfect opprotunity for a swap) I've had plenty of experience with the DET from 240s and b13s. The VE is new to me and I read about the motor, how it works, and it's benefits, the problem I've been having is finding the motor. First question is how realiable has the VE been? I only drive my sentra for about 6000miles per year but I'm hopping to make this car fun to drive, not just a commuter. So I'm up in the air between the sr20det or the ve. I know the cost of mr bluebird but can't find a thing on mr VE. ANy suggestions would be great.
ps. what places have giving you motor swap guys the best experience.
not being a jerk or anything but there is ALOT of info on sr20forum.com for ve swaps, prices, parts, procedures. im sure someone will chime in with a direct link to what u need

I am sure the ve is plenty reliable...underneath all of the valvetrain changes it is still an sr20. A ve motor will run you right up around $2000, and then you need a jwt ecu $600, and a set of slenoid switches to control the vvl, you can get a pair from summit racing for right around $150, you should go with a new upgraded clutch while you are in there too. Other than that, it will use mostly all of your other sr20 parts on the se-r. Or you can go with an sr16ve...same swap procedure, just a little cheaper ($1300 for eng). JGY customs has the engines, and should have everything else you need to complete the ve swap www.jgycustoms.com
just wondering, but is it possible to swap heads between the SR20DET and the SR20VE and possibly run something like a SR20VET? or would the valvetrain changes make it impossible/dangerous to boost? seems like it should work, just might take a load of tuning
This has been discussed before, It is possible. IIRC, you need to set up external oiling lines for the head as none of the de/det oiling holes line up. Boosting the ve, I have heard is a bad idea...rumor has it that there isn't sufficient oiling in the head to keep everything cool with the added heat of a turbo set-up. But then again, what about the ever so illusive sr20vet? I wonder if there are any oiling changes in the block/head on the factory turbo vet?

thanks alot for the link. I'm thinking this is the way I'm going, being that through the years every kid with a b13 I knew had the det swap. Plus I've always owned nissans (3 right now) and i kindof like the idea of a "vtec" having sex with an sr. thanks again
You could build an SR16VE with DET crank and pistons, and a few other things, then turbo it with a GT35R and expect around 500whp.... All for about 6 grand MAX.
Yep. Contact Andreas. 100% insanely postive forum feedback for years. Warranty on the hand picked, low mileage, motor. Andreas is considered an Uber-Mechanic on SR20Forum.com, you get his outstanding, service, help and advice after the sale. The guy is a freakin' SR20 motor guru, dead honest, and will be there when you call.
The VE will be just as reliable as a DE. With the right bolt-on mods you are looking at 200whp NA. And JWT is developing cams for the VE.
2K is a bit high, a clean VE will run from $1,200 to about $1,600. Maybe 2K with all the ancilaries.
2 cents

nice thanks for the links.. Being that last night was probably the last night for my stock sr motor, it's time to pull the trigger. I talked to a few shops today and I'm sold on the raraty of the sr16ve. It sounds like a straight foward install and keeping the car NA is probably the best way to go for me. I know if I get the DET I'll want to go nuts with it being that so much power is waiting to be tapped. This is the car I do all my commuting and winter driving in I need to try to keep it somewhat reliable. I have not been able to find much on the 16ve on this forum yet, but I'm a sucker for being different.
