Even though I just ordered the hotshot, i was just curious
The reason they do that is because the SR20DE Pacesetter header does NOT come with a AIV bung plug. Since the low port SR20DE cars do not have the AIV, you will need to block that off.

Another reason PS can keep the price so low on the header.

Here is where it get's quite interesting for my install:

I used the bolt end off of an old EGR tube that goes into the #4 exhaust tubing. I had sitting around (same thread) and a nickel. Yes a 5 cent nickel. It fit perfectly in the hole and the EGR bolt keeps it nice and tight. No leak whatsoever.

Can anyone describe the differences between the 3rd gen, 4th gen, and 5th gen HS headers? I'm more interested in any reliability issues than an extra 1 or 2 hp....do the 4th and 5th gen use thicker tubing or have some other features that would make them more robust than the previous generations?

Thanks,

difference is collectors and flex pipe designs...
also about the egr method of plugging the hole...courtsey nissan has the EGR plugs for $5 that are a perfect fit for that hole i got mine and install took about 30 seconds and it fit's like a glove.

They don't plug the EGR on my 5th gen Hotshot (or 3rd or 4th gen IIRC). It hooks up just fine. As does the AIV.

Flex pipe design DID change however, and they changed the flange a little. I don't believe there is any difference in ANY of the tubing between 4th and 5th gen, but I think 3rd gen is biased towards a little more top end power (and 2nd gen has the little crossover pipe like motorcycles have).

Thanks for the info. I did search here and at the SR20DE forum prior to posting, but all I found was comparisons between Stillen, HS, and Pacesetter, or threads that debated whether or not the 5th gen made 2 more HP than the 3rd gen.

Thanks again,

FYI, the PS header can be bought for $142 for the shipping painted one and $216 for the armor coated one @ www.importperformanceparts.net I personally wouldn't let crappy paint stop me from saving $300. I won't even let the welds stop me. I'd just strip the paint off, finish off the welds and paint it with that high temp por-15 paint. But if I wasn't a do-it-yourselfer, and was having the header installed I'd probably pay the extra money for a HS to avoid any problems. Then again, if had to pay someone to do anything to my car I probably wouldn't be messing with it in the first place. But that's just me, the whole point of modding my car is to make it go fast and to do it myself, the experience of working on the car can be as much a reward as driving it. In the years that I've been reading and researching b13 mods I can honestly say that my car will not have any Stillen, HS or Greddy products on it. Not because I can't afford them, but because I won't afford them. I'm not into paying for names though.

As far as ceramic paint goes, the reason for high temp paint is to keep the paint from coming off of what it's painted on, it does little to nothing to keep the metal from absorbing heat. Pipe insulation is cheap and would do far more to keep intake pipe cool. Back to rusting and shipping paint, when the PS SS header comes out, rusting will never be an issue, and it's supposed to be significantly cheaper than the HS as well. If I don't do an engine swap this year, I'll be buying that PS SS header and coupling that with a home built SS catback.

for newer sr20's we don't have the AIV so it has to be plugged on the header if said header was made for a high port

(You can fling your Pacesetter inferiority complex all around you want, but remember it's just a stupid car part.)

Amen.

Well I just put the pace setter on yesterday.... and I love it.. I know all the paint I saw inside has not burt out.. so maybe it will make even more power...

As far as quality it really sucked (taking that paint off was areal bitch) but I did it and didnt get all the black off... I repainted with a nice silver 1200 degree paint from home depot.... looks pretty good.

and as far as price I paid 147 shipped from www.ptuning.com
and still had money left to buy the pullies and belts and tune up parts...

I refuse to pay 375-475 for a header... I don't need the extra 5 if it is even that hp for an extra $300....

I a`lso bought the pacesetter because I read up on the Sr20 forum that allot of people with the Hs had flex pipe problem along with cracking of the primaries...

But I love my Ps and I dont need a header to last for life because I won't have the car that long...
