Man, you got some BALLS tying it to a tree like that.
Seriously, it sounds like something’s not right here. I mean you've exhausted about every means of removing that sucker. I'm pretty sure you're gunna need some help removing that axle.
I'd highly recommend taking it to a machine shop and see if they can lend you a hand. Honestly, don't take it to a mechanic... go to a machine shop and talk with someone who knows what they are doing. (mechanic would likely F- it up even more)
If its not going out the retaining clip has too be stuck in between the axle and the diff sleeve. So my fear is that the clip will share apart and steel pieces will remain in the gearbox. And the bad is that I see no solution for this problem. You have to force it out, hoping not doing too big damage, and then clean out the gearbox.
In all of this pulling, and prying...have you tried to put it back in all the way and have a second try at removing it? I know some of you are giving me a confused look right now...but I am completely serious! If something got jammed up in the splines/clip...jamming it harder won't help matters! Fully re-insert the axle...and try to pop it out again.
I did try that------- 20 times it was just too siezed up ....

I ended up cracking the case---- so I went to nissan and got a new seal--- I cut it in half and when I reinserted it, I used marine sealent ( which is the strongest thing I know of) to seal it. I did get the case partially apart so I could clean it out from debree of me f-ing it up. I reinserted in the car and as I type am halfway through getting it slapped back together. I learned my lesson. I will be buying another tranny and I will keep this one for parts since it is in great shape. It may leak a little, but I dont care-- its for autox and a backup family vehicle. TALK ABOUT A PAIN IN THE ASS- I SHOULDVE HAD THIS DONE LAST SUNDAY!!!!!!! GO BROWNS!!!!!.
I will post picks of the final product when I get it back in.....
THANKS GUYS FOR ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS, DONT LET ANYONE EVER TELL YOU THAT THE 1.6 AND 2.0 ARE THE SAME-- JUST A LITTLE DIFFERENT....THIS TRANNY IS A HELL OF ALOT HEAVIER!!!
its done-- now there is a new problem...clutch is in-- no leaks....CAR STILL WONT GO INTO GEAR WITH THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED---- what is up with that?
I have it up in the air with the wheel off--- I put the clutch in and pop it into first....it starts rolling without even getting off the clutch---!!!!!!!!
Have you checked out your cable? is it adjusted properly? I feel for you on this car...been "there" before, I hate it when things don't go as planned - Or in this case just plain don't go!
I have exhausted many ways in the past of pulling the drivers side half shaft. I found the best way is to put a large pair of channel locks between the tranny and the shaft. then rock them back and forth. it applies the most even amount of pressure. Couldn't believe how easy it came out that way. I know the original poster of this thread already has done his damage but maybe this idea could help someone else.
heres a bit of humor for you guys.... I have a nice corporate job and am usually a well mannered upstanding citizen type, but this FOOKING TRANNY has put me back in the stoneage!!!! I still havent gotten it out!!
SO TONIGHT, I GOT HOME FROM WORK- WENT AND CHANGED MY CLOTHES AND HOOKED IT UP TO A TREE IN MY FRONT YARD!! THEN I HOOKED IT UP TO 15 PSI WORTH OF MY Z31 AND PULLED!!!!!!!!
I just spit Pepsi all over my monitor LMFAO. I needed that thanks. I dont mean to laugh at you, cause ive been there. I never had to go through thoes measures though.
DUde you did this an you don't think something is messed up internally and the issueis the clutch. This thing sounds FUBAR. Take the damn tranny case apart and inspect the gearstack and housing.
i had the same problem as you when i was taking out the axles on my car... you HAVE to take your time. Get a nice long prybar and just keep trying ... that snap ring can be a real bitch . It will come loose you just need to take your time. I got a buddy to help me pry it from two directions...
I used a prybar to get m,ine out and it came out half way, then when I pulled the tranny out, I put the shift linkage in neutral and wiggled it out and it popped right out. It has 2 splines and a lock ring near the top to keep it in.
I thought it was hopeless also. Then put a big adjustable wrench to straddle the shaft, pushed the bottom of the wrench toward the transaxle, and the MF'nSOB popped right out
