Hard shifts, moving, jerking shifter

I recently bought a 96 200SX SE-R, and I've noticed that it has some tranny problems. Sometimes when engaging 2nd or 3rd gear at regular speeds, the car seems to halt sharply for a split second (feels kind of like the hard engage of a low gear at a high speed, like shifting into 3rd going 60 mph), and then go into gear. This happens mainly in the middle gears.

Is this a bad sign? Should I just change the fluid or something?

Also, the car is tough to get into reverse.

Sorry if this is vague or too basic, but I don't know much at all about transmissions, they boggle my mind. If anyone has any info its much appreciated.

Oh forgot to mention, the shifter knob seems to jerk around as well when engaging the clutch and accelerating and such. Don't know if its related.

Yeah, change the fluid out for some quality stuff. It sounds to me like your trans has had a hard life. Best to start with the simple stuff to make sure.

I know exactly what your talking about and I know what your problem is. If your shifter is moving alot and you have a slight jerk back when you shift then its time for some new motor mounts or at least the two on the Dog bone. When you shift and then engage the tranny again it makes the tranny move because of the Tq. If your motor mounts are old then the Shifter will show it and you will feel it in the clutch.

Lightningmotorsports.com...look for Prothane motor mounts. You might have to call them to get the price on them.

I never thought of that, and now that you mention it I do notice that my engine shakes an awful lot and unusually hard when I start it, as if it is loose on the mounts or something. I'll try prying them around with a screwdriver or something to see if they are worn.

Thanks a lot!

You probaby wont be able to tell that they are bad by prying on them with a Screw driver though. But just looking at them if they rubber has cracks in it and looks dry then you should relace them.

BTW dont go the cheap route and get the ES Motor mount inserts. If your mount rubber is already bad then they wont help any. Just get the Prothanes which replace everything but the Metal housing of the mounts. They are cheap also.
