I recently bought a 95 200SX SE-R with a 5 speed manual tranny, I went to crank it in the morning and the engine turned over slowly but started. I drove 1 mile and turned off the car then went to restart and nothing. Battery is good, all electrical works, but engine wont turn over, just a click and nothing else. I am assuming it's the starter but I cannot locate the starter to inspect wires or to tap on solonoid to see if its stuck or bad. Even though I climbed under car and thourouhgly inspected with hood open I cannot locate starter. Any advice as to if the problem is a starter, solenoid or something else like the clutch switch. I have replced several starters on cars but never on a front wheel drive car, Iam guessing the damn thing is buried deep somewhere and difficult to replace. I have shopped around the usual Auto Zone and other autoparts stores but I am being told its like $179.00 for starter plus $70.00 for core. I also own a 97 200SX SE with 1.6 and auto tranny and found out the 1.6 starter is different and much cheaper to buy. How hard is it to replace the starter on the 2.0 and what is best approach. All help and advice would be greatly appreciated

A simple test.
When it clicked did the lights dim ?
If yes then suspect the battery and or contacts to battery.
But if no change then I would say yes the starter is prob bad.
Been there, done that twice on Daughters SER. My 1.6 is still trucking.
Keep your paper work. If you get the choice get a long nose starter, there are two styles, don't remember which make is long nose sorry, but it obvious if you compare them. Nose goes round end of the pinion gear.
Please search, there is a "how to" written by me that was then improved on by someone else.
The starter is under the intake and is a bxxxx to get at.
If you find the starter on your 1.6 under Air filter box over the transmission, it is in the same place BUT on the other side of the flywheel/ring gear, so you can't see it.

Good Luck.....
Its very true what they are saying but if the stater has a dead spot. You can hit it with a long tube and a hammer. But change your hole charging system like battery, altenator, post and battery cables and of course the starter i work at autozone im a manager there so i know.

Thanks for your input.
I think he already knows to give it a good whack with a hammer, he couldn't find the starter though.....
The "dead spot" is often worn out brushes or a sticking solenoid, the whack jars things lose and the starter works for a few tries.
However replacing everything is not easy to do or a viable option for a lot of us.
Since you have the parts which starter is the long nose ?
Thanks for all the help guys. I bought a starter althought it cost me $160.00 since its SER 2.0 engine and replaced it. Problem solved and it was a real mother to change but all is well.

Congrats on getting the starter put in. I replaced mine on my 96 200sx, and I know how hard it was. It's put in just about the worst possible spot. I'm about to put a new distributor on mine, as it went out....again, and then I will need to replace the timing tensioner.

Yeah, I just got done dealing with the starter on my sentra SR. And it is a REAL pain, especially mounting that god-forsaken bracket again. That's all finished and done, now it's just the bloody alternator I can't remove!

I can assure you there is nothing easy about workig on a 200 SX SE or an 200 SX SER, I own both and are a real bitch to work on anything in the engine compartment. I recently replaced the termostat on my SE and it was to say the least a fother mucker. good luck.
