Mostly just emissions laws, particularly California, but for the most part it's based in part on the fact that cars outside the US tend to be a bit more powerful than the US counterparts. An example, cause I can't find a better way to explain it, is Nissan 'claimed' that they wouldn't release an sr20det in the US because it actually would've outperformed the 300zx at the time, which obviously would kind of be out of place considering it was supposed to be the top Nissan sports coupe here. They seem to be listening to the public though and they're really pushing performance here now despite all the past. I'm sure there's a lot more than that at stake, but that appears to be the basic issue. What you need to do to get it to pass, take it to get it tested, if you fail, find what you failed on and make adjustments from there, or take it to a mechanic familiar with that kind of swap and they can usually tell you what you need to do.

You can add a Cat converter to any exhaust pipe. That should lower emissions. I dont know how you would add an EGR system though. A lot of the Smog techs in cali know their shit and arent going to miss a big ass turbo in your engine bay.

I quess most people dont realize that Japanese emission laws are alot harder that ours. If you do any thing to your car over there you will be fined.

Here in Nevada the county my parents live in where i went to highschool, they have no emissions testing.. but where i live now 30 miles away in another county the emissions test is required.. so every year i just get registered in my old home town.. it is great.. i sure wish i could get my hands on that SR20det....

anyway, good luck.. i hope you find a way to pass the emissions test..

If im not mistaken, the bluebird is RWD? If thats the case, then you'll need to modify the motor and slap on the transaxle

you are mistaken. the BB is AWD. All you need is the FWD tranny. But most JDM motors pass smog check from what i hear... its the Visual that will kill you. Gotta go under the table.

most of the times its emissions. but its against the law to have an imported engine installed. i think youre only able to have an engine that was available for the particular car youre putting it in. (USDM) i know for new cars, the biggest issues is crash requirements (bumpers have to sustain at least 5mph hit, and some other things) and emissions laws that we have (mostly CA, im sure) so even if you get it to breathe cleanly, you'll probably fail visual. turbos arent the problem, theyre actually on a comeback from the manufacturers. (neon SRT-4, pt cruiser turbo, mazdaspeed protege, more?) i could be talkin out my ass, call motorex.
