I was doing a quick read in the Removing the Timing chain guide because once and awhile I do hear a slight clicking sound during idle, only lasts a couple seconds. But I am more worried about my timing chain jumping. Im almost at 147K miles and it happen to someone at 154K or about there. Should I get my chain checked and/or replaced? Im having Cyl 1 missfires (Once every like 200 miles) so Im pulling off the injectors sometime anyway to check them, maybe I should check the chain too at that time. What should I look for? I work at a gas station where they can do a lot of that stuff, but labor is a bitch and Id like to do what I can myself, they let me use their tools and AllData.
if you hear the timing chain ticking, the first and easiest place to check for failure is the tensioner. on some cars that ive worked on the tensioner has some sort of access panel, i think it was the maxima v6. not sure about yours, but if it is weak and easy to get to, that would be an easy fix. also i have seen those nylon pieces wear out, so you may have a chain to do anyway. goodluck!
I will find out where the tentioner is using Alldata. Ive asked the mechanics a couple times about the chain and they just say dont worry about it.. but how can I not, its my first and only car with no money to buy another and no service history on the car. =(
Im not positive if its that ticking.. it doesnt happen a lot but if I warm the car up and let it idle you can hear it if you listen long enough. It comes for a couple seconds, go away for either a short or long time (few more seconds to a couple minutes) then comes back, repeats.
The timing chain tensioner isn't the easiest to get to on the SR20's. It's at the back of the head on the right hand side of the vehicle kinda in front of the oil filter. Your tensioner could be getting weak, it's not unheard of. I'd start there and work your way up.
There is an upper timing chain guide that Nissan doesn't even make anymore because they realized it gets in the way and was a worthless design. You can remove it without worry and that might help aliviate some noise. It's very easy to access. It's right under the valve cover. There's a write up stickied in this section of the forum.

If you are trying to get faster on a track you will go off course. The question is where, and how bad..............

Yeah I saw that stickie.. thats what kind of made me worry, later someone posted about their chain jumping and bending some valves. I will find out when I go back home.. talk to my mechanic friend, since hes going to check the injectors about the cyl 1 missfire (dont really want to since its such a pain) I will probably take off the guide and check the tensioner while he does.
Checking the tensioner and the general condition of the chain is a good idea. I would not worry yourself to death about this, just do the general inspection, and replace the tensioner if necessary.
In in the same situation. Im running a SR18DE engine with timing chain rattle at the moment. Im trying to find out a part number for the new style longer tensioner? Also going to remove the upper guide once i install this. Please anyone?
