the wsop actually last like 8 days or somethin like that. it may not be as physically taxing as "sports" but it def. puts a grind on your body and mind considering you play for 12 hours straight for 8 straight days.

OMG, I know gamers that play in those similar conditions, so are FPS and MMORPG now considered sports?.

damn... staying in a 5 Star Hotel Casino and playing poker for 12 hours is awful, They must train for months to be able to handle such conditions
Come on give it up...no way no how we buy it as a sport or even close to physically demanding......unless you lose your house or car...now that can be mentally taxing

While I agree that poker shouldn't be on ESPN as much as it is, I have two points...
1) its a huge cash cow for the network. Their ratings are huge when they show the main event highlights, which started last Tuesday.
2) Unless you play poker on a regular basis, read books, and try to learn new strategies, you can't really understand why its entertaining to watch on TV.

Actually it's on ESPN 2... cash cow? hahaha ya okay....
Still not a sport...
looking at your prespective then... Chess is a sport? Checkers? Old Maid? Black Jack, PS2 Games, Computer games,...etc...
You can put sport after anything, that doesnt necessarily make it a sport. PokerSPORTS is no different.
I am not missing a big boat, I agree it isnt a sport and shouldnt be on a sports chanel, altho I also like watching it, and it could really help UPN's ratings... (anything could). The long and short of it is that its more exciting to watch than NASCAR and its equal in sport status.

What would you defy a sport? Nascar takes both mental and physical abilities. I read a stat some where, apparently the average driver loses over 2 quarts of sweat in a single race, not to mention the concentration it takes, the smallest mistake could kill you or another fellow driver. I'd consider nascar a sport easily, imo not poker, however I'm not goin to lie I'm not dissin on those poker players b/c I play poker often but they'd probably make me look like an idiot out there, plus it takes some balls to throw out hundreds of thousands of dollars on a single game, lol

equal status and more exciting in your opinon. not a slam, but it's probably not exciting to watch because you don't understand it.... it's certainly not equal in physical, mental, or any other aspect...
You've obviously never driven a race car or for that matter seen a race in person..if you had you would understand.

Just because something takes balls to do, doesn't make it a sport.
Sure Poker is a cash cow for ESPN, because its trendy right now. And it may well be interesting, I mean even Lifetime is interesting to somebody.
Still not a sport.
And as far as Motorsports go, let me ask you this:
Motorsports is a contest of great physical and mental skill, but because the implement used is not a ball makes it a non-sport in your eyes?
Those drivers are more athletes than some of the fat-asses that play football and baseball, and smarter than a lot, a lot, of ballplayers.

I would argue the Cash Cow as well... if it was it wouldn't be on ESPN 2... Nascar is on Fox and NBC and on during Primetime quite a bit... that alone speaks volumes.
I admit..the celebrity poker is fun to watch..mainly because you see those people out of the norm... They are joking around...etc..etc... Professional Poker is boring as hell.. they are all stiff, afraid of giving up a tell.. Yes there is some strategy involved... but the down cards and river is pure damn luck..in draw the draw is pure luck..
A card game a sport? Get real... I would consider yard darts more of a sport.
