bigend bearings need take engine out?

i have a 92 nissan 200sx s13. been told that the bigend bearing shells need to be changed, wondering if i can do it with out taking the engine out?

What bearings are you talking about; rod or main? If so, is the engine knocking?

yeah the engine is making a knocking sound. i think its the big end shell bearings.
