Question Question about a 240SX

I recently bought a '91 Nissan 240SX. I was told it came from Jersey so it had some rust on the bottom. So far I've had the Cad. Converter, Muffler, and most of the piping replaced underneath plus I have my back rotars, master cylinder, & brake booster replaced. When I had those replaced the guy who did it pointed out that my car wasn't just a little rusted but hella rusted. I'm fine with that and he said I will have to probably replace the front end piece by piece (I need strut arms I think for the front because the calipers and stuff is rusted on there thus why I didn't get front rotars put on) put the question I want to ask is... he said my chasis is rusted and it's not very safe to keep it. He said I should sell the car but I've put so much money, time and effort into the car I hate to do that so I'm wondering two things... 1) if the chasis broke (one part is rusted real bad) what would happen, he said my car is a unibody because I inquired about getting another chasis and 2) is there any thing I could put on there to help it from collecting any more rust ?

Thanks.
Darrell

you can start by stripping down your car 2 bare bones, grind down rust spots, and most likley ur gonna have to do a little welding here and there, then paint every thing with some rustproof paint inside and under.

yea, vbut so is towing a car that broke inhalf doing 70 on the freeway, not 2 mention the dangers. or, he could go to a junkyard, look for a junk 240 that has less rust as his, and swap parts, that should be easier.

you could also, for the time being, take a bunch of body filler and cram as much as you can into the rusted holes, and then cover it all up with some kind of undercoating. or just have a good shop weld in some plates over the holes. it'll be safer than driving it as it is and it'll stop the rust from spreading. i suggest the latter of the two.

i would personally either take the first idea and strip the car, which would be a major pain in the ass, and would fill the garage but you would get a good knowledge of your cars needs, or do the junkyard idea, which would be good and probably give you tons of spare shit parts, everywhere. filling the car up with stuff would kinda fix your problem but your frame would be a lot heavier and it would look like shit and well, are you going to trust body filler to hold your car together? i certainly would not .....just dont get in a wreck and get the car taken care of soon, somehow

i'd do the junkyard option. you should be able to find a decent one (sometimes they're in pretty good condition) for a few hundred.

buddy of mine picked up an S13 chassis with no engine, just tranny for $300. Took the SR from the wrecked S13 and swapped it into the Junkyard chassis... boy did that thing stink...

i've never come across a junkyard, salvage yard, dismantler yard, etc. around my area that wouldn't sell you an entire car. the only problem with that is that your car is more than likely going to be a junk or salvaged title. sometimes you'll be lucky and find a clean title car there, but those are usually in good condition and you'd have to buy it around blue book price or what not.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I've wondered about the chasis swap with a car from the junk yard and thus how the title will work.

I'm going to take the car to about a dozen body repair places that do frame work and get their opinion on it and then based on that decide what I should do.

The place I had the brakes done at, like I said the car was pretty rusted so the brakes were totaled, said the car is a waste of my time because it's so rusted. I don't particularly like the guy working there. I asked him about weilding and he said you can't weild onto rust. So like I said going to some places that deal with frame work and see what they say.

Anyways.. thanks and I'll let you know what the body repair shops say.
