1993 Nissan 240 SX
(rusting and beginning to fall apart.)

I just noticed a wire dangling down in front of and below the radiator. At the end is something that looks similar to a power transister. I'm thinking it's probably a thermostat/heat sensor to trigger the electric fan. Is this correct?

I can't be certain but it looks like it was mounted to the brace that runs vertically in front of the radiator. If so, I won't be able to mount it in the same position but maybe somewhere nearby. Does it need direct metal to metal contact or does it just measure surrounding air temperature?

If it were a heat sensor, shouldn't it be behind or to the side of the radiator?

I don't think it would have direct contact to it because of how hot it gets, however, it should still be pretty close to it.
