Lightbulb 98 240 engine swap in an 89 240. how similar are they?

I am currently swapping an 98 ka motor into an 89. I put the trans and motor together and when i turn the crank there is a sound in the bell housing!! are these motors identical?
They look to be the same to myself but will the transmission from the 89 go on the 98 motor without any mods? SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!! The noise sound to me like the input shaft that goes into the torque converter is not all the way in but the trans and motor are bolted up tight. I used the same input shaft from the 98 and it went right into the 89 trans with no problem. I know the noise is not normal, i pulled it off and looked and put it back on and still the same thing. There is nothing wrong with the 89 trans but the 98 slips.
any help would be greatly appreciated guys!

Does the '98 motor have the proper crankshaft pilot bushing for an A/T?

Both starter and both torque plates (flywheels) should be the same for both engines. You need to remove the A/T along with the torque convertor. Now do a test fit of the starter to the engine block and observe the clearance between the torque plate teeth, front and back, and the starter housing.

There is a reinforcement plate that bolts on to the center of the torque plate on the outside; it may instead be between the crankshaft flange and the torque plate; if so, it'll cause interfenence with the starter.

Don't forget your P/S, A/C and tech and a few other random things will have issues between the change from SOHC to DOHC. It's just like doing an SR swap into an 89
