Hello all, I acquired a 91 240sx coupe not too long ago and immediately fell in love with just about everything about it. Trouble is, its falling apart. It's rusting and the motors got a pretty bad oil leak.
Now, my plan was to drive it till it dies (should be a while, but goin on 200K) and then get another 240 with more potential to throw money into. Specifically, I want to turbo the Ka to ~300-350hp.
However, I'm broke right now, and will be for the foreseeable future, so on to the the question:
I'd like to rebuild my Ka. At least to fix the oil leak and hopefully do a complete rebuild with turboing it in the future in mind. Then, driving it in my current 240 until I can find a good deal on a 240 w/ no engine in good condition and dropping my engine in that.
So, thoughts and comments on this plan? I admittedly know very little about what actually goes into a project like this, other than it costs quit a lot. But I'm in the process of learning and I'd just like to know if this would be at all worth while.
Much thanks, and sorry for the life story

Rebuild is a good idea for any KA setup over 300whp. It's going to be quite expensive, but ordering an engine kit and a complete turbo kit would be the easiest way. Have the engine done up by a machist, then install the intake mani and turbo mani, then drop the motor back in.
Maybe $8,000 with machinist labor for a bottom mount GT28RS setup.
$9,000 to $10,000 with the premium to a worthy top mount kit.
Well, thats good to know. Nice hearing it from someone whose turbo'd a Ka, too. However, I don't think I'd be able to part with that kind of change right now. Someday, I hope.
Now, How about short term? Is it reasonable to expect that if I rebuilt my engine now and find a barebone 240 sometime in the future, that it would be easy to drop my nice engine into a equally nice chasis? I can't imagine it'd be hard, just as far as cost and availiblity, is it worth it? I don't want to start something I can't finnish.
Also, my engine was once starved of oil, like to the point there was none in it. So what are the chances its too screwed to be worth rebiulding in the first place. It's run just fine since, though, just developed a clicking sound.
And as far as rebuilding for NA goes, is making it like new or better worth it or is there just some bare essentials that I could do for a lower cost option?
Thanks again, and sorry for all the Q's, I've just got so much to learn before I do something like this.
The rebuild is the most expensive part of the KA lifestyle. If you have a KA with possible internal damage (oil depletion makes this more than likely), you can just get another S13 KA24DE for pretty cheap. My S14 KA24DE is a 1997, came with harnesses, and had low miles, and I got the thing for $305.
If you want a cheap turbo setup and are thinking about rebuilding later, I would just get a new motor.
Yes, I was considering that but I wanted to see how feasible a rebuild would be for the money I have to spend right now. Seems to be my only option at the moment if I want to keep my 240 (which I do).
Thx, I appreciate the help.
Hmmm. how hard is that to fix, and worth it since I would probably have to pay someone elso to do it? Also, What are the chances I could cannabalize my engine's headgasket?
thx for the heads up
Argh. Don't buy a KA with a blown head gasket. Especially not from JGY. KA24DE is a common engine that you can get for cheap if you search in the right places. Someone parting out a body-totalled S13B or S14 will get you the engine for cheap.
