stock 89 temp gauge

I have an 89 240sx....there is 3 dark lines on the gauge. the bottom one, the one at the very top at the "H" and one right below that. when i run my car, the needle sits at the mark right below the "H", but not all the way at the "H". is that where its supposed to be?

First, check the gauge, check the sensors, they are known to go bad.

Second, if it turns out it is that hot, i'd be concerned, thermostat(they are supposed to be fail safe but..never know), radiator, water pump, head gasket, check em all.

ive never seen mine get above the 4th mark, at its very very hottest, but when i first installed the motor it sat up that high, freaked me out, but i replaced the gauge cluster, and temp sensor, and now works fine, its very popular for KAE owners to use aftermarket temperature gauges, as they typically dont work very good.

Oh, and i see your pic has white faced gauges, you wouldnt hapen to have white faces in your car would you? because i have a very good feeling the white faces are what ruined my cluster, they were in it when i got the car and none of the gauges worked right, i removed them and some started working but i think they nocked them out of calibration or somthing, the needles rubed up against the faces...just an observation.

AH okay, was just making sure, trying to elimiate possiblities, thats one down the coolant temp sensor for the gauge is located on top of the motor, its a tiney little thing, with a little blue wire coming out of it, metal connector not plastic like the rest, probably where you should start, really easy to change out.

find someone with one of these laser temp gauge:

Factory gauges like ours aren't always accurate. This will tell you your exact temps.
this way you will know if your sensor is crap and not have to buy anything.
