Question What is the deal with the variable intake

I installed the AEM CAI and I keep hearing about this variable intake. I don't know a whole lot and I was wondering how this variable intake works and where it is exactly located. Can anything be done to it to make it kick in sooner?

I also was wondering about this knock sensor shit, does it really do that much as far as performance?

The variable intake is a setup where at X number of RPM's the runners are swithched from longer (torque producing) to shorter (HP producing).

I think a quick use of the search button would give you many insites into both intake and the knock sensor.
