Timing chain.

I read the owners books and I can't find out if this ever needs to be changed.

The engine having a timming chain was a strong selling point as most 4cyl cars have belts.

You didn't see any mention of the timing chain because it never needs to be replaced. Timing chains are designed to last the life of the motor, so you never have to worry about replacing them.

I'm not sayin your wrong or anything but I had a jetta VR6 that had a timing chain and it had to be replaced at 65k. Dealer wanted $1600 to do it b/c it was located in the back of the engine, so the tranny had to be taken out to get to it.

My motor has 171,000 miles and the timing chain looks beautiful.

See it for yourself:

There are cars here that have 300,000+ miles with the original timing chain.

I never said i didnt believe you but if i had to replace the timing chain on my car, then on some cars as it seems the timing chain does need to be replaced at some point of the cars life. That is a common problem with vw's, i know that, hopefully Nissan is different.

Nope. It's never due. Timing belts do need replacing, but not the chains.

Has Nissan even used timing belts since the E-series engines in the late 80's??

Yup, they used them in the V6 and V8 motors. I don't know if they still do so in the new VQ35DE motors and the 4.5L and 5.6L V8 motors though.

Well, I have no knowledge of the 6's or the 8's, but I was talking about the 4 cylinders.. (hence the quote) I don't think they've used belts on them since.

Yea, in that case, you're right. Nissan completely stopped offering timing belt-driven four-bangers in the USA from around 1988-1990 and up.

That is a damn good looking timing chain, especially after 171,000 miles.
