I think I'm in trouble. Third doesn't sync above 4000 coming out of second. I guess to many green light drags. This tranny is junk. I have the 36K warranty but am sure the dealer will reject it because of mods and stickers on the car.
Before I attempt to try to get it fixed under warrenty, should it all be cover or does the warranty expect me to pay labor. reason asking, I can't find the warrenty paper work?
Anybody have a clue?

do you mods in any way affect your tranny( ie short shifter etc?) if not, they HAVE to cover it... and warrenty work is free for everything, inc labor...

Does anyone have the PNs stamped on the 02 and 03?
We got our 03 in January of 03. I suspect we might have a 02 tranny in it.
I only say that because we have all the problems that 02 owners complain about.
I took the car out today and it was a little cold out. Above freezing. I got a clunk going from 1st to 2nd with double clutching it, and I got another clunk going to 3rd. It works fine once it's warned up, but it takes too long. No matter how I shift a cold tranny, it clunks and even grinds some times.
Iv'e taken it to the dealer a number of times, but so far I have been unable to get a new one. I'm about to get real pushy though. The problem seems to be getting worse. As in it wasn't even that cold out and it acted like it used to when it was below freezing.
i used to have those problems...until i got a '03 tranny. this thing is everything the 02 was supposed to be. i could jam the thing into 3rd at redline and it would only feel like a granny shift on my old 02. i brought it into my dealer and they replaced it, no questions asked. they even put in my headers while they were at it. the '03 still is a bit clunky when it gets cold out, but only very rarely and has never grinded no matter how hard i push it. when shifted carefully (not granny style), it is super smooth. my '02 tranny was so bad that when i was coasting along, with the clutch all the way in, and shifted from 2nd to 3rd, it would grind...WITH THE CLUTCH ALL THE WAY IN!!! try this in your car...you'll get pissed like i did.

Not only is it all free, but they'll probably pay for a rental car while the work is being done.

I just got mine replaced last week and it was covered. That problem third gear would happen to me when i would "over accelerate" and take it to redline and then try double clutch it. Even if u would put it al the way down to the floor it did it. If u get rejected for a warrenty, go for the 03 trans cause it better than the 02s "Crunch Box."
Is there anyway to take the car to Nissan because your tranny sucks and have them give you a 2003 tranny under warranty even if you have a 2002 Spec V? That would be super smooth, huh?!?! Let me know if anyone has been able to pull this off!

I tried to get the 03 trannie and i couldnt and i think i had the worst cause my trans was horrible the dude was trying to convince me that i couldnt drive a standard even tho i have drove every car there standard and never had a problem with it. I ask them if i could get the 03 trans and he rerplied that its an 02 and its warrenty is under the 02 and u would have to purchase the 03 for nearly 3000 including install. None of that makes ne sense cause a trans is a trans and for the install, bull cause they have to replace it ne ways.

Try another dealer. I hate to use the word lemon, but if you can't find a dealer to fix it for you and you have a really bad tranny, then you should fight for a buy back. Ya, I know, the car might not be a lemon per say, but when dealers don't fix a real problem, it makes it a lemon. I get really pissed off when car companies don't take care of problems that multiple cars have. I will probably never buy another nissan again after this car. There are by far worse cars out there with even more quality problems, but I feel that nissan is still trailing a lot of other cars in the quality department. More important, quality on my spec v isn't a good as nissan quality used to be before they had money problems.
When I got my car it had a few quarks I didn't like. They seemed to have all been fixed exept for a not so smooth tranny. Hopefully new fluid will change that. The dealer I've been working with has been pretty decent, but it is sorta funny what they has to say about the tranny fluid. I went on a test drive with them about a week ago. Attempt number 4 on nissan taking care of a clunky 03 tranny. The service technition suggested ATF and said that some of the 350Z guys where complaining abou tthe same thing. The only known fix this dealer had was ATF. Well I got some amsoil 75/90 and the dealer is going to put it in for free on Wednesday. I really hope it fixes the problem. If not, I will be fighting for a buy back myself. The spec v tranny is a joke and it makes the car feel sloppy overall. No matter how nice the power is or how nice it handles, if the tranny is sloppy it ruins how the car drives. I am not even tring to shift the tranny fast. It is sloppy at normal shifting speeds. I hate it.
I have a feeling later down the road, there will be a recall on a lot of trannys for our car. Hopefully by owners taking responsability to send complaints to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ and nissan on major problems that are not getting fixed at the dealer. The fix might be simple, but not being taken care of makes a car a lemon. I know there are some that will think the cars are not lemons because the fix is simple, but when a dealer sends any car under warranty out the door with a unfixed problem 3 to 4 times (depending on local state lemon laws) it makes a car a lemon. The car doesn't have to be undrivable. It just has to be a problem that isn't getting fixed in x amount of tries by the dealer. If you truly think you are not being treated right at the dealer then start making complaints and keep them simple and stick to the facts. Stupid biching and ranting letters or calls will not get you anywhere. Good luck with your 02 tranny. If we are extreamly firm to nissan amout tranny issues it might help rush a real fix from the factory and help future nissan owners.
Forums and clubs are more powerfull then you think. We our young (because our car is young), but the DSM club is the reason Mitsubishi has a recall on the transfer case. Without the club the recall could have taken years and multple deaths. Granted spec v tranny problems are not lock up all 4 tires, but I could see them causing a wreck if a driver can't get the damn thing in grear and has to stop and fuss wtih the tranny instead of paying attention to the road. Sadly enough, that is how recalls get rushed.

yeah, be sure to mention clubs and forums, i mentioned that i read things on all of the Spec-v forums and that this was a problem. the dealers actually do have a service notice for the trannies, but they'll try to screw you off if they want to. also, you may tell them that they get a refund from nissan for the cost, which will show the dealer that they dont wanna mess with you.
