oil burning and new 2003,2004 SER

Guys, whats the deal with the oil burning in the 2.5? is this a problem and I hear about engines failing? Whats the deal? I am looking to buy a 2003 leftover because the front is nicer than the 2004, I don't like it at all. how do you all like the 2.5 and any issues you have with oil burning or problems?
Thanks chris 92 classic, 00 frontier

there was an oil burning issue with the earlier models, but that has now been revised and the engines r good.

The problem is not completely taken care of. Yes they are good engines but the problem is in the exhaust. They placed the pre-cat too close to the engine/manifold and it is overheating, causing it to break up and particles are being sucked back into the engine. The particles tear up the cylinder walls allowing excessive amounts of oil past the rings, which ends up being burned with the air/fuel mixture. Nice huh? There aren't many engines that have been replaced because of this, but there are a few. Nissan is reprogramming the ecu's and installing heat shields to take care of the problem. You can read about it at www.nissanusa.com under the Owning/Recall section of the website. If I'm wrong about any of the info, anyone please feel free to correct me.

There are 2 causes, one is the one that simeronbugh explained. There is a recall for the cat and that's all being taken care of. The other cause was on the early model 02's they used a different type of piston ring. I'm not sure of the specifics, but the material that was used took forever to break in. The oil would blow by the rings and burn up in the cylinders. This wasn't a real problem in itself because after 2-3k miles they would be broken in and it would stop burning oil. The problem was that people didn't know that their new car would be burning so much oil in the first 2-3k miles so they didn't check it. The engines ran out of oil and...well...you can go from there. In the late model 02's they switched the piston rings they were using and it eliminated that problem. There is still the problem of the breaking cats, but that is being resolved right now.

so, a new 2003 or 2004 shuld be OK with the CAT now? I worry if this is still an issue. Can you get the hotshot/stillen header and still pass emissions? Are their 2 cats? Does the ECU throw lights and go into limp mode? I have a 92 classic and don't worry about anything like this. You can get 15HP from the header I guess too. Chris 92 classic

With a header it's really kinda iffy whether you'll pass emissions or not. There are 2 cats, and the header eliminates the first, but the 2nd one is the main and it stays right where it is. An SES will come on (but no limp mode) because of the first cat being eliminated, but you just have to move the 2nd o2 sensor behind the 2nd cat to fix it. It should pass the sniffer, but I don't think anyone has tried it yet.

Goto NissanUSA.com and go to Owning, then recall info, then select the car.

I got my recall letter yesterday. Certain VIN number ranges on '02-'04 models. My question is, why doesn't the recall effect every model? What did they do different on some and not others? And why is this still a problem on the '04 when they have known about it since first year production?

Wait wait... so the ENGINE is made in Japan??

Cuz there was a sticker in the car saying it was made in ... Calsonica Mexicana or something like that. Mexico, in my mind.

Someone PLZ verify!

Mine was made in Smyrtha Tn. That was the final assembly point on my new 03, I just got yesterday! They said Engine and tranny are made in Japan, other parts, mexico on one model I looked at. But mine was made in Symrtha. Thank God, I hate to see it was made in mexico like problem fords! So, my engine and tranny were made in japan, but assembly was in Symrtha. My 92 was made in Symrtha too, with all plastics made in USA, maybe the plastics are made in mexico now. Anyhow, I love the car and it really handles well for factory. I just got the SE-R, no Spec V. I do want to get the header one day and a JWT pop for it.

Talking

if you get a aftermarket header you will not need the recall.
