Performance mod advice for a Spec V (daily driver)
Hey. Alot of good info here, and if this has been covered somewhere else, I apologize. Basically, I have an '04 Spec that I'd like to mod, but it's my daily driver, so I dont want to do anything that will void the warranty. Though I've always read about mods and import tuning, I've never had this type of car before.
So where do I start? The CAI seems a good deal, cheap, what's the effect? Also, an exhaust system might had a few hp...
Any info and specific companies would be great. Also, if anyone is in the NYC area, know any good local shops that'll order and install the parts?? (I like to DRIVE cars, not good at working on them.)
You need to run a quick to see what you could find on the CAI, and also the exhaust.
That being said if you take your car in for repair and it has a CAI it will void your warrnety (depending on what is getign fixed). If you do take it in just swap back to the stock airbox. I have been careful with my car because I was very concerned about the warrenty, so I only have coilovers (suspension) and a K&N drop in filter, which by law does not void warrenty.
Use this site and use the search button, pretty much all the basics have been discussed at length.
An intake wont void your whole warranty. It will void your MAF warranty, but we all expect that.
I just had my car in for the recall and to get my AC compressor replaced. I have intake and catback exhaust and they didnt say anything about them. They people i get always end up talking to me about my mods and how they have a Nissan they race etc etc.
Get an intake, you will like it and your warranty will be just fine.

Legally your warranty can only be ignored if the failure can be specifically tied to the change you made. If the MAF fails for some reason other than oil contamination, even with a K&N or other oiled air filter any dealership would have a hard time proving that they have cause to not cover it under warranty.

I would just go with
Injen CAI, HS/AEBS/Nismo header, Greddy/Mossy/Stromung cat-back
SOME not all dealerships will cover your car if you buy Nismo parts and have them install it. Go there and talk to the Master Nissan tech. Not over the phone. Some places are cool but like I said not all.

yeh... nissan will do anything.... i mean anything.... to not pay for what happened... even if it takes months to figure out its their fault in the first place... make sure you talk it over with YOUR dealer... its different in certain areas
On your other question -- what is the CAI's effect?
If you get the full cold air kit (in fender), it will give the engine a lot of cooler fresh air that an air box can not supply. The air intake will suck in a lot more air than a stock box. The result is more combustion in the cylinders. More air to a "fire". More power. The stock air box is contained and builds a lot of heated air which does not burn as well. Cold air is always better. You will notice a difference.
Same with the exhaust. The less restricted the engine can "exhale" the better. Now you will really notice a difference.
It all comes down to breathing for the engine. It is kind of like a human body. The more you can breath fresh air and let out the CO -- the better you are.
But you do not want to totally unrestrict this engine on the "exhale" exhaust. It needs some back pressure to run properly.
Also, you will void the warranty for your MAP sensor - so be gentle with it when you install the CAI. It is delicate and sensitive. If you drop it it is probably done
Same with the exhaust. Get a new muffler pipe and you voided the exhaust. SO WHAT - it's gonna rust anyway!
SO all in all -- have fun!!

although true t-bone cold air aids in hp the aem cai still is drawing air from the same place as the stock box so not much cooler air is here and as for the amount of air to and engine is concerned an engine can only use as much air as the engine needs im an old skooler i have a 8sec/160 mph street car ive been racing for 20 yrs. and alot of people get ripped off on these little bolt ons i have a cai and a cat back and a pulley 1. the cai looks good 2. the thermal sounds awesome and the pulley was a waste of money save you loot and buy the turbo this is the stuff that really works
Header is the best place to get power. Remove that cat and a ton of restriction. The CAI makes a good amount of power also. An exhuast will also net 5 or more ponies.

Turbo kit on the way! RHB5 turbo, RS manifold, injectors, downpipe, KYB GR-2 struts, and RS rear discs
I have a mongrel RS now
Header shows that biggest gains obviously, the CAI is pretty damn good if you belive the 10hp NISMO claims. As for the pully, buy a sticker the result may be better.
