free and mods should never be used in the same sentence.

Although I'm not certain how suseptable the '04 models are to hypersensitive knock sensors, you could most definitely relocate the sensor, anyhow. You might also find that you could remove the balance shafts without buying the expensive JWT kit. This all depends upon how mechanically inclined you are, but these tasks could easily be done in a weekend.

You can have your dealer advance your timing if you want, but you have to have a nice dealer to do that. Weight reduction is free and if you do enough it can make a significant difference. Remove the balance shaft and ground the knock sensor if you want, the KS is easily reversable if you have to take it in, the BS removal is not...just something to keep in mind.

if you do the ks mod, RUN 93 OCTANE OR BETTER or you will get detonation!!! A few people in Cali did the mod and used 91 octane and they detonated!

sure they can, there are many manufacturer installed parts that are meant to silence or decrease a cars performance that can be removed at no cost, such as air silencers, the knock sensor(which by the way nissan reccomends high octane anyway). my old car had some free mods you can feel and hear the difference after doing them( gutting precat, removed air silencer, adjusted wastegate, boost cut elim), examples of spec v free mods:
ground knock sensor, eliminate air silencers, balance shaft elim, need i say more?? i'm new to spec vs but not to modding cars.....so i will say it again FREE MODS(they can be used in same sentence)
