"one pop" sound when turing left and turning right sitting still.
Hello all, I’ve been to these forums many times and have done some searching around with no answer. I’d like to get any ideas of what may be wrong before I take it to a shop, here goes.
I have a 2002 Nissan Sentra Spec V with about 66,000 miles on it.
When the car is sitting still and you turn the wheel hard left then hard right ( i.e. turn left then suddenly turn right) again and again – each time you change direction I hear a single “pop” (only one pop).
So, to diagnose the situation, I went to each wheel, both front and left and shook them back and forth, in and out, to see if there was any play to suggest a bearing was worn or some kind of joint problem. – No sound, no movement – good news
I then opened the hood and had my friend turn the wheels. ( i.e. turn left then suddenly turn right) again and again – each time you change direction I hear a single “pop” (only one pop).
As we did this little test, I noticed that.
1.) you can actually feel the pop at your feet on the drivers side near the steering column when doing the steering test.
2.) with your head under the hood and listening, you can hear as though it is coming from the steering column
3.) Driving along – no sound
4.) Driving and turning left or right – no sound
5.) Sudden turn left or right under load – meaning some g – “one pop’
6.) No play in either front wheels by moving back and forth or in and out – no play – no sound.
So – question to all experts. What could it possibly be?
