i have an 03 spec v and its got 87000 on it and after about an hours worth of driving it starts to buck, check engine light starts flashing. after shutting the car off to prevent damage to engine it clears all the codes and the computer when scanned doesnt see or recognize there was a problem. any one have any ideas (the lazy bastards at my dealer dont have a clue and wont even call techline).
in past history it shows the classic p1147 or downstream o2 sensor and the latest would be from about 5 weeks ago (last time for hi-way travel) @ 64mph the car picked up a silent code of p0420.
I also have an 03 Spec-V, mine's just recently done the whole "bucking" thing but it was when I started it. I turned it off and then back on, the bucking was gone but the rpm's were kinda high... I let it run for a minute or so and then turned it off and back on and it's been fine since... no CEL or anything, it's alittle strange and hard to tell with the recall on the cam sensor that they won't touch until after the 18th but I've read a bit about others experiencing something similar.

i have a 03 SPEC-V and have had that "bucking" problem, i got a code having to do with cylinder one misfire and took care of the problem. After that i got the infamous p0420 code. When i first turn the car on it idles high (about 1100-1250rpm) for a couple minutes and then drops back down to (550-700rpm) and seems to run fine. But i still gotta take care of the p0420 code... i've heard to just get rid of the cat altogether.
ok perhaps a stupid question... what's the p0420 code?... when yours did the whole "bucking" thing, and it was a cylinder misfire was it while driving or when you were starting it? My mechanic has given me a handful of reasons why I'm still getting a delayed start sometimes... from maybe issues with the starter going out to perhaps the flywheel being chewed to other things as well... of course, they are a bit concerned because on Saturday morning I went to do a cold start and it was doing the whole grinding bit as if it was already turned on ... it's a bit strange but not too bothersome, the only real concern was that it seemed like it idled a bit higher before and then they(Nissan) did the ECM reprogram for the crank position sensor and it was great for about 4 days and didn't really bounce when idling but now it's idling lower and kinda a little bit of a bounce when idling... my guys told me that it may have been just trying to do some adaptive relearning as far as the idle and rpm rate goes, to try to adapt to the way I drive but still be within the acceptable range... oh, and I'm looking to swap out my shifter and change to the short shifter... any ideas about where to go to get information on installation?

From what i have been able to come up with the p0420 code is an emissions/electrical error code that says major diagnosing is needed. they being nissan want to have you test the upstream 02 sensor then coolant temp sensor ignition coil plugs injectors and ecm. it was running like pos so i checked the coils and they seemed good and the plugs are like new put it all back together and the car runs decent but still has a code for multiple cylinder miss fire.
the running rough problem happens and then disapears before it can be fully scanned or tested and doesnt like to show up at the garage.
the error occurs when driving or idling anywhere from 1000 rpm to 4500 rpm (a little scared to go over that) & at any weather condition. i also have headers and complete exhaust and cia on for the last 55000 miles.
i just spoke with a very reputable performance shop in my area and they said to plug in a computer (if you have one) adn run diagnostics on the 02 sensor. they ahve seen the problem before and said that this code almost always is the cause of running too rich or too lean... i'll soon find out if these guys know what they are talking about or not and i'll let you know...
