2004 Sentra 2.5L "service engine soon" light

Hi I wonder if anyone has this problem: I have a 2004 Sentra 2.5L sedan. Within the last two years my "service engine soon" light had come on several times. The first time, I took it back to the dealer and they replaced something (can't remember what the part was called exactly). The second time, I took it to a different dealer. They didn't find anything wrong, and the light was turned off after their inspection. Today, the light came on again. I'm planning to take it back to the dealer again, but it's getting annoying. Any other Sentra owner having the same issue? I'm tempted to just ignore it but according to the manual it sounds like it could be a sign of a serious problem.

Thanks,
Rob

I have seen this problem before. Service soon light, is telling you that something needs to be replaced soon, or cleaned. most often occures when a senser is fouled. It can be reset by disconecting your battery for a few minutes. I sugjest you have a full service done. As it seems you may put alot of miles on your sentra.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion, Joe. Actually I barely reach 10k miles a year, so I really haven't put on that many miles. Yes I will take it to the dealer once again just for the peace of mind. I want to make sure that it's nothing serious and the light is something that I can safely "ignore" (especially after my warranty runs out ) -- I'm generally pretty good when it comes to regular maintenance.

go to advance auto or auto zone and have them pull the codes for free. then relay the exact code numbers here and we can see what the problem is. if they check codes and find o2 codes DONT by o2 sensors of them. let us know what they are first....

Today I took it to a Nissan dealership and have them checked it out (cuz it's still under warranty). Once again, the problem was with something called "throttle position sensor" and they had to replace the part. I remember the first time the service engine light came on, this was also the part that was replaced (by a different dealership at the time).

Since this appears to be a recurring problem, I asked them today whether or not this is something that I can safely ignore, and they said it's probably okay. I certainly don't want to have to pay to have it replaced again after my warranty runs out.

being the car is still under warrenty I'd take it in everytime it needed something without any hesitation.

Once the warrenty is gone, autozone/advanced will check it for free, trying to get you to buy the part but as bigern45 said, check around to see what other people think before buying.

On a side note bigern45 what part of KY are you from?

I have seen a few Cel with Throttle postion sensors and they have ended up being the ECM. I work at a nissan dealership and have seen lots of ECm replacments on 2.5L. A friend at work had a throttle postion code and replaced it and still had problems. It did end up being the ECM.

you probably need an upstream o2 sensor, but y are you here. you need to post a separate thread to get more input.
