2004 Sentra 2.5s automatic, loud clicking sound and key fobs that don't always work
Hello, I own a 2004 Sentra 2.5s, automatic with just over 13k miles. The car has never been modified and was purchased new from the dealer. Anyway, I have what appears to be two problems with this car:
1. An audible metallic crackling sound comes from the engine compartment after I drive it for at least 5 minutes. I first noticed this in February (but that doesn't mean it wasn't present before) in the dead of witner (I live in NYC). The crackling sound, however, greatly diminishes or disappears altogether when the car is put into "park", but the engine is still on. The crackling sound then resumes after the car is turned off (you can actually hear the metallic crackling sound slow as the car sits in park). The sound disappears altogether after about 10-15 mins in park.
A couple of people (including my dealer) have told me that the crackling sound is the normal sound emitted from the car's heat shields and there's nothing to be concerned about. Is this accurate? The sound is quite audible to the point where people getting in or out my car ask me if there's anything wrong with the engine.
2. I also have a problem with the key fobs. The fobs work perferctly at times and not at all at other times. Again, the dealer tells me there is nothing wrong, and in fact, told me that they couldn't even detect the problem. It seems that in certain locations in NYC the key fobs do not work, but in other areas, they work fine. Do the fobs use radio signals? If so, could this all be due to interference?
Thank you all for any and all advice and/or comments, etc. Have a great day and thanks again.
Your 2.5s has the same engine as the SE-R and the Spec V, and all those vehicles make the same noises. So yes your dealer isnt lying to you, When you shut of the car, the crackling is the heat shields retracting to its normal size, because they expand with heat.
That 2.5 engine has noise internals, that clicking you hear i believes the valves? mine does it to, i can even hear it while driving. Totally normal... unless your losing gallons of oil per minute... then thats another issue.
Key fob? call me an idiot... but what key fob?

Thank you for your response. Maybe I don't have it quite as bad, as you indicated you hear that ticking/crackling sound while driving. I only hear it when I lower the windows and turn off the radio, but it's still a bit loud. I assume that you hear the crackling/ticking sound when you operate you car (as opposed to when it's in park)? I had a 2000 Maxima before this and never heard anything like what I hear with the Sentra. At any rate, the engine seems to operate fine (good accel, etc.) and I checked my oil after I read your response and it's fine (I changed oil last back in mid-June). I just find it strange that these cars emit such sounds. I guess I wanted to be on the safe side, because dealers are so fast to void your warranty if you operate your car while you're aware of a defect/problem.
Again, thanks.
As for the key fobs, the 2.5s came with two (one for each of the keys) and a valet key. But I thought all Sentras come with key fobs. At any rate, I'm learning to live with them not working everywhere, but it can be an inconvenience from time to time.

ya, no prob, thats why this forum exsist. To share thoughts and issues. The 2.5 engines are rather noisy but when you say fobs? as in remotes to unlock your car? ya mine has the same issue.. has to be like in direct line of sight, or they wont work. like i can lock and unlock my car from inside the house.. but when in a parking lot, range isnt fantastic.
The valve tick i hear, is when i have the windows rolled down, and the radio off. Goes away with any kind of accelaration. Oil on my car seems ok... i lost a 1/8 of a quart after 3000 miles? Not use to a brand new car with oil loss? lol...o well i drove it hard after the break in period no biggie. Carry on
