Automatic vs. Manual

I am of the opinion that it is the year 2005, and if my car can tell me how much longer I can go with the gas I have left or the temperature inside or outside the car, then it should be able to change gears on its own. It seams that statement only shows my ignorance. I have heard several people say that manual transmission will get the best performance and that automatic transmission actually is bad for the can engine. What effect will my automatic have on my performance? Is the automatic a bad thing? I have heard a little about an automatic gear shifter what kind of performance does this get? Thanks for you help.

its common knowledge automatics drain more power than manual transmissions, hence why they're most ocmmonly slower than their manual counterparts. you bought an ECONOBOX, remember, not a vette.

unless you build a car and the transmission, manuals will generally offer better performance. on economy cars like the sentra, manuals will also offer slightly better highway gas mileage. on higher tech cars that are utilizing 6 and 7 speed automatics, they not only shift quicker than manuals but will also get significantly better gas mileage.

my car now tells me I get 30.1 MPG.......which brings me to another question......those fuel additives....are they any good? Some say it boosts the MPG by 10......true....false? Anyone had an experience with it yet?

Read your user manual, it says right there fuel additives like octane boosters and injector cleaners are not to be used in our sentras

If Chevron is in your area, you will get better mileage with it as it has an excellent additive called Techron which has been demonstrated to be safe on all engines...and that question was exceptionally off topic.

Omm thanks.

Speaking of gas I use the cheveron gas because it is the station near my house. But on a tranmission note has anyone heard of an automatic gear shifter? I heard it is just like a normal automatic but a switch that allows you to switch gears will in drive if you don't want to wait. is this correct?

the best way to do what you want there is to just manually shift the car from low to drive. but there should be little need for that if you are gettign on it it will not shift till the optimum time anyways. And yes it is the year 2005 and yes you can buy a car that will efficently shift itself and damn near drive itself only the base price is around 50,000. the era of the manual is coming to an end shortly even the higher end sports cars that have traditionally been manual are going to semi automatic trannys.

Are those more effective then the manual?

Since its mostly cons here for automatics... I will say this. An automatic is more consistent then a manual, which is why you tend to see drag cars with auto rather then stick. Plus... you can't outshift an automatic race tranny....

that isnt the main point...

for example, there is an 8 sec street driven supra here in vegas and his car is auto....mostly for the fact that with a built auto he wont lose all of his boost pressure every time he shifts...he is in full boost all the time...hence his 8 sec. timeslips

i may be wrong but the fastest 6-speed supra that i have seen still ran 9's

Was that directed at me or someone else? If it was to me... that didn't make any sense with what I said...
