How to get to Tach wire (instrument cluster)

Trying to get to the instrument cluster, or more importantly the tach wires. How do you access the cluster? Thanks.

There is a write up in www.nissanperformancemag.com on installing indiglo guages in a B15, that is a good "how-to" on the cluster removal.

BTW, its a piece of cake.

The signal to the tachometer is a DC voltage. If you are looking to install an external tach, this signal will not work because it will be looking for an AC signal to the ignition control.

That said the signal to the tachometer is on Pin 45 of the Combination Meter connector.

Hmm, where is the combination meter? I am installing a remote starter so I do need the AC voltage not DC.

I was mistaken. I just checked the ECM pinout voltages, and the tach signal is a 10v square wave (AC). (In the B14 it is a DC voltage)

The combination meter is the panel with all the gauges and warning lights on it. The connectors are on the back of the panel. The wire to Pin 45 is Blue with an Orange stripe.

You can also get this signal from Pin 32 (QG18) or Pin 36 (QR25) of the ECM (Blue/Orange wire there, too)

Where exactly is the engine control module located? I am working on a 2002 Nissan Sentra with 1.8 engine. I couldn't get an accurate tach ac voltage from the injectors nor from the back of the instrument cluster.

If the pin on the back of the cluster doesn't work, then neither will pin 32 on the ECM because it is the other end of the wire to the cluster.

you'll be hard pressed to get a way to wire up a tach properly. I've tried every wire on the entire car as well as used the MSD tach adapter.

This belongs in the QG section anyways.....but just to let you know, if you are trying to hook up an aftermarket tach, it's not going to work.

you got the XE model. the XE doesn't have a tach, auto or not. GXE and upper models have tachs.
