Don't All Airbox/Intake mods trigger "Service Engine Soon" Light?

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. There's some good stuff here.
I just picked up a 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE 1.8L, 5-spd the other day and was messing around with the intake for fun...

I removed the L-shaped plastic tube that connects the airbox to somewhere below.
I noticed there was some kind of sensor plugged into this L-shaped tube; sensor had a little blue thing and the wiring harness had 2 thin wires.
Q. What is this sensor anyways? Mass Air Flow?
(there is a bigger sensor up near the throttle body... would that one be MAP sensor? or another MAF sensor)?

Anyways I took a drive around the block just to see if the engine would sound any better, and my "Service Engine Soon" light came on.
FYI, my bro has a '96 Civic, he did a Ghetto airbox mod and it sounds Mean! with no "service engine soon" light to boot; i thought i could do the same on my Sentra...

(of course before reading all these forums, i tried disconnecting battery a few minutes to try to reset ECU but this didn't work)

Q. So I hear the trick to reset ECU is leave battery unplugged for a few HOURS ??

..this leads to my main question...

Q. Those of you who have Cold Air Intakes... and/or Ghetto Airbox mods...
doesn't that trigger the "service engine soon" light?
-If so, do you just live with the light on all the time?
-Or is there a way to bypass that first sensor on that L-shaped tube?

Thanks all, happy tuning.

That is the Intake Air Temperature Sensor. If it is unplugged, the Check Engine light will trip. On the later B15s it is integrated into the MAF.

Where do you people "hear" all these totally false things, anyways?

no, properly done mods do not trip the check engine light. If you're gonna do a mod, do a full intake...don't screw with the airbox mods...they're useless.

Hey thanks a bunch!
hmm.. air temp sensor... sounds pretty Useless. Mass Air Flow or Pressure... i can certainly understand, for the ECU to adjust A/F ratio... but Temperature?!
I think i'm gonna remove that L-tube and just let the sensor hang there. Well, i'll twist-tie it in front of the hole. It should still "sense" the temperature from there.. har har. Inside the tube, or outside the tube... the temp will only be +/- whatever with a standard deviation of whatever... good enuf data for the ECU methinks. I'm not building a damn Bridge here! just wanna get better Sound from the intake!

Hey nice pics of your ride on your website. I noticed you mounted the Air Temp Sensor onto that red-colored adapter.

BTW what is a good source to get all this info on engine Sensors, etc? Are you getting this from a shop manual? Is it Chiltons, Hanes, Nissan ?

I still can't get my SES Light to go off... i tried unplugging the battery overnight! (12+ hrs!). It didn't work, heck the radio still remembered all my preset stations! Must be one helluva back-up battery on the ECU! I should yank it and use it as a UPS for my computer.

I tried looking for the ECU under the dash as per...
http://www.sentra.net/tech/ecu.php
(but i believe their info only goes up to '98 Sentras)

I couldn't find any info on how to reset 2002 Sentra 1.8L ECUs.

I hear all these false things on the Internet! ..where all good rumors get started.
Well it wasn't false, it was just for the wrong model year. But hey it was Free so i had to try it... that's what modding & tuning's all about right?
If i wanted an out-of-the-box @$$kicker i woulda just leased or financed myself a 350Z! ..left my screwdrivers in the garage and saved myself all the hassle! ..and instead of sittin in here talkin to YOu guys i could be out Mustang-hunting!
But c'mon man that's the easy way out!

Nah, full intake isn't in the books for This car...
I'm not goin racing in This car; it's my daily econo driver; paid for, free and clear. The engine's too quiet, i just want some more intake noise.

Happy tuning and ride safe,

unplugging the negative terminal to the battery for 10 mins resets the ECU. however, if there's still a probem, the CEL will come right back.

Then you must still have a problem. I would suggest reconnecting everything back the way it was until you choose to (can afford to) do a real mod. If the light is still there go to the dealership or autozone and have them pull the code.
