Knocking Sound???

Hi,
I'm driving a 2001 Sunny with the QG16 engine, just had the head gasket changed and the having in shaved to increase compression. But am facing a problem now, I keep hearing a knocking sound when accelerated. The local mechanic claims that it is due to the piston hitting the valves. Is there any ways that I could adjust the timing chain to prevent this? Pls advise.

Thanks,
Seven
