Hey Guys, Im kinda new to this board but the info is great. Ive got a 00 Sentra GXE 1.8. The SES light has come on several times with 0420 as the code. The guy checked it and said that it was a catalytic threshold below minimum. At first he said nothin was wrong, and then said I had dirty fuel injectors, then i left the dealer and went to another mechanic and he said that I had a bad plug and that was one of the causes. He orderded the plugs but didnt order the NGK platnimum, they werent even long enough to go to the bottom of the hole. So that set off another code for engine mis fire. I reordered the plugs and put in the OEM NGK plugs and now the engine is running great. From the OBDII reader it says my car is runnin lean all the time, what would cause that?
Also I had the belts replaced and for some reason one sounds like a turbo tpe sound now when i speed up, what would make that happen?
Thanks alot folks,
you have a bad O2 sensor. that's what the 0420 code is. it's one of the post-cat o2 sensors (you have a 2000 gxe so there are 2 post cat sensors on your car)

Yea I figured it might be that. But the code just pulls as 3 way catalyst ineffeciency. So I wasnt sure. Im hoping the SES light will go if in a day or so and then I can see if it will come back on
if you reset the ECU or replaced the sensor, the SES would have gone off. if the problem still occurred, it would stay on or come back on.
The only replacement that will work in terms of O2 sensors are the specific replacements that you buy from the dealer, none of the generic units work yet.

Cool, how can i reset the SES light without a OBD2 machine, someone told me that it will reset automatically after so many drive cycles, any idea howmany that is, or can i just flip the switch to reset it.
The light will reset itself useally after 100 miles but will continue to come on when you least expect it. Your code of P0420 = Catalyst efficienty below threshold (Bank 1). If you can obtain a manual, (Bank 1) will be the clue as to which sensor to replace.
OBDII Code readers or scanners are pretty cheap to own now days, less than $100 and that will be the only way to reset or erase the code(s). I have found these readers cheaper at Autozone and Pep Boys than they are currently selling on E-bay.

If it's a high-pitched squealing sound that eventually goes away, then it's probably dirty or greasy pulleys and/or belts. Try wiping down belts and pulleys with some degreaser, Windex, whatever, just to get all the crud off. This should make sound go away immediately. Try this first since it's easy and free.
If it's mechanical-sounding, then it's probably a bad bearing under one of the pulleys. A/C compressor bearings, maybe alternator bearings. It might take some trial and error to isolate which one is causing the noise.
