My QG18 GXE is currently in a service bay @ Tustin Nissan.
I took it it for service thinking there was a bigger problem than the fuel filter.
They want to chage $280 bucks to replace it.
How much was your replacement fuel filter/pump.
Symptoms were as follows:
Hessitation
Odd 'blow' noise @ 4k rpm
power loss.
I've called 4 other nissan dealers in the area with all different results...
mark - buena park nissan - $54
Tom - garden grove nissan - $99
lance- power nissan irvine - NO FUEL FILTER
frank - CONNELL NISSAN - Fuel Filter never needs replacing
the last guy is right. The fuel filter never needs replacing. It's either the pump, or something else, but I can't diagnose if I don't know the symptoms.

do you have any modifications?
On a cold start, the engine spats and sputters about for a few minutes whilst lightly pumping the gas. after a bit of that, the engine revs normally out of gear.
around 3800-4400 rpm, very audible noise. sounds like hissing.
noticable power reduction.
piss poor gas milage.... ~250mpt, normally ~325mpt
my car is a bone stock QG18DE
*am i correct in assuming there is some sort of VVT for this engine type, because that's what it feels like. The noise starts when the engine is topping out of the first timing set and stops once it changes to the newer timing. The dealer said this noise was cause by the engine straining because my mix is so lean. I deffinately do not disagree that the engine is having trouble getting fuel.

sounds to me like an exhaust leak near the manifold/block gaskets or manifold/secondary...or perhaps at the cat.
perhaps fuel pump, but definitely not fuel filter.

Got my car back from the dealer noonish on Friday. Freshly washed and the belts lubed due to some skwakage. Laid down $280 cash and Dan told me that I needed a new MAF, which he'd already told me. Asked the parts guy how much a MAF runs, $488 and change. Yoiks. Get in the car and go.... almost. The hessitation problem I had in the AM before warm up now happens all the time, through all gears and is much worse than before. The more gas the engine got, the less it would go. I was livid. I took it to my buddies around the corner and left it there. Tried to do some searching for a used or cheaper MAF. Didn't find anything till yesterday at about 10 AM. Mike's Import Parts in WIlmington had one. Called em up and "Mike" (mexican named Julio) quoted me $125. SCORE! Took off from work at lunch and told them I'd be a while (Irvine to WIlmington, which is located on the north side of the Long Beach Harbor) and made the drive to Mike's. Found the location easily, walked in and they had the part ready, did the exchange and Mike was going to tell me how they don't give refunds. He also asked me if this would fix my problem. I told him I did not know being that it was a dealer recomended repair. He said Fucking dealers, if it doesn't fix it you can bring this back for any other parts you need. Good guys at Mike's. Drove back to work and finished out my day. The 2.5 hour break was nice. After work I went to my car and swapped the MAFs. Easy peasy, took maybe 7 minutes. A quick trip to Autozone for a new air filter and it was time for the test. PERFECT. Car runs great. Much better than I did before I took it in. So the dealer railed me nicely for that Fuel Filter swap, but I made up the difference with a little leg work and paid 1/4 price for my MAF.
Great info. I just joined this forum because of this exact problem. My QG18 hesitates and even stalls sometimes in the mornings. It also has a fraction of the power it used to. It makes noise at around 3000+ RPM. The dealer said I needed a new MAF too ($500 bucks!). I'm going to look around for a better price also. Was the one you got from "Mike's" used?

I'm 100% sure it was.
came out of box with the part # written with chalk on it.
it was deffinately a wrecking yard. Howver it was clean ass clean could be. no scuffs or any marks. I was confident it would work fine.

:
The two guys above are crazy,
1) You Do have a fuel filter.
2) I bought my car used (1999 SSS bluebird from Japan qg18DE powered) so I have a japanese manual,(which I threw away). Anyway, you may want to check the fuel filter for sediment every time you clean your injectors (I do this every 6 months) and throttle plate (once a year). If you have crap in your tank, though the filter is quite robust, it can clog. Nothing lasts forever, especially filters!!. I paid 30 bucks for my replacement filter @100,000 KM, though it was a japanese, not american make. Don't know if there is any difference.
