Replacing Oxygen Sensor

I am new to this forum so please bare with me if this is th wrong forum to post in. I have a 2001 1.8L Nissan Sentra. Recently my Check Engine Light has come on. I have been able to determine that it is code P0140 which means that oxygen sensor 2 bank 1 has gone bad. I know that this is one of the two rear oxygen sensors that reside beyone the converter.
Going through the dealer it will cost me approx $152 for the job plus $125 for labor. so roughly $300.
I have found some please that sell oxygen sensors online made by bosch that will only cost me roughly $55. I am trying to figure out if this is something that I can replace on my own. It does not seem like it should be to difficult. I have some car maintenance experience but not a ton. I replace alternators, batteries, brakes. Pretty much the simple stuff.
I was hoping someone could help me find some good instructions on how to do this. Also if this is something that I should not be playing with I would appreciate the warning also.
Thanks in advance.

You need to go back to your dealer and ask them how a maximum of 10 minutes of labor costs $125, because it wouldn't take a professional anywhere near 10 minutes to unscrew one sensor and put in a new one...................if you're not familiar with it, have the dealer do it, but go in there informed.

When I called the dealer he said they would have to run the diagnostics test and then install it and it would take them about an hour and a half. This is why I was thinking of doing it myself. I usually can figure this tuff out if I can find someplace that describes where to find this sensor. It seems pretty simple to replace.

I know that it is qick but the problem is that most dealers charge you between 60 and 80 bucks to do this. I aagree there price seems high but that is what they charge so nothing I can do about t except figure out how to do it myself.
So any help in the do it yourself area would be great.

Personally I'd say buy the proper O2 sensor and have a shop install it, because teh sensors have a tendecy to get really stuck in there............a mechanic will have the right tools to do it.

my check engine light came on too .but mine came on after the swap and my mechanic says its probably cause i have a aftermarket exhaust. but its not going to affect your cars performance. I just reset it but within a week it came back on.

your mechanic is a fool. aftermarket exhaust will not make a CEL come on.

Spoma,

A generic O2 will not work. Although Nissan's O2 sensor is a bosch, the voltage levels are different...mainly the minimum. If you go with the generic, most likely your SES light will remain on.
Edit: I just check your code, it seems that you have a problem with your O2 heater circuit. Check your heated O2 circuit fuse, make sure that it is not blown, if it is then you'll have to actually check the wires to the O2 sensor. Make sure they are not cut, chaffed, or grounding out. If everything is fine, it could be that you mix-up the wires when you extended them.

Rodrigo, Mike is right. There is no way a catback will throw a SES...You should get the car scanned with a OBD-II reader.

the car was diagnosed and what came up was the o2 sensor . this was after I had the cat back installed ,what he said was that i should change it but if i didnt have the $$ the car was not going to choke and die on me in the middle of traffic. that is why i think he said it was not going to show in the performance of the car.

Rodrigo....go get your code pulled and post it up. Once you do that I am sure someone will be able to help. With no code, it all speculation.

no, with a bad O2 sensor you might get slightly worse mileage and that annoying CEL, but that's about it.

dude the price they gave you is rediculous, im not really familiar with your car but, i dont think theres any O2 sen that a good pair of craftsman or any other good brand tool cant get out,its all about leverage, finding it just open your hood look down, where the 4 pipes connect from your head, should be a thing sticking out of the pipe whit wires connected to it thats the first one and count the second spikey thing poken out of it (with wires con.) is it, your more than likely alittle down from your header, you might have to follow it back aways im not sure thats the one, like i said im not fimialar with your engine, perhaps someone that has one might be able to help you more, its really simple if you have a jack, and some tools, i really would say if your up to it give it a shot, or if you know someone thats good with tools have them do it, piece of cake..

Take it from me, the QG oxygen sensors (especially the post-cat sensors) are WELL KNOWN to be nearly impossible to remove............if an amateur tries and ends up stripping them ( Like I did twice, mind you) They will have to be cut off and drilled out. Not fun.

Just have a mechanic do it, but not Nissan.
