oil change goof-up

I have a 2003 Sentra XE. Just to the upper right of the oil filter there is a sensor ( I believe) of some sort. While attempting to get the filter off with my filter wrench, I severed the one wire going into the unit. What is the purpose of that unit? Any help would be appreciated. I re-connected the wire. If it is something real important I will take it back to the dealership to be checked out. Thanks.

no idea...could be the oil sender...........just make sure it's connected well and you'll be ok
