i think that all this boosting has made mike a hard man to please...and i use the term MAN lightly...HAHAHA...since the GA16 and QG18 have alot in common power wise, and the GA16 has only made about 120whp modded, i dunno if FINANCIALLY it IS worth it...the most youde be lookin at would prolly never get about 145-150 whp on a good day, with internal mods being done of course...i dunno...unless you have an ALL MOTOR kinda pride, i dont think itde be worth it either
What people fail to look at is that the GA/QG have a lot of power under the curve. This is what enables Mike Saiki's 120 whp GA to beat 144 whp B16A powered cars. The GA/QG has a broad flat powerband while the B16 has a pointy spike that makes more power over only a tiny area while the inferior Nissan pulls hard through the whole gear.
The "lesser" Nissans have more area under the curve if you intergrate the dyno charts.

Mike, I heard something from Sarah Forst about the future of the QG engine in the US......being that it might not be around for a while.........I hope that's not true? Seeing as how it's used in different displacements around the globe. Anyway, I agree it does have a broad, flat band, but it does fall flat on its face up top, and I guess the right cams would help. I'd just like to see someone get an N/A QG above 130whp.

Wasn't Kieth's car around 130whp? I don't think any final dyno numbers were released after the SAFC install but it helped a lot, most notably in the upper range. It has been rumored that the next base model nissan might have a renault engine in it, no body knows. Isn't there a qg20de as well?

naw.....he made 115whp I think...................he never did get his car tuned properly after the extrude hone and SAFC install and I never heard any numbers from him.
I'll sell ya my intake mani when I take it off....you can try yourself!

I believe you are right in a cost/hp ratio that a turbo is the best bang for the buck, but say your "kit" is around $3k right now plus clutch and installation so that's $3,500-$4k just for go-fast mods. That will put you around 160whp-180whp you guess. Now, intake/header/pulley/custom exhaust will cost around $900 or so and bring you around 120whpish. A flywheel will give maybe 4-5whp or so, with the benefit of faster reving as well. A SAFC which may not be as beneficial on an 04 1.8 will give a few whp as well. I believe that 125whp and 130wtq or so is abtainable without doing any extrude honing and getting into the engine. This may be an overestimation, but we really only have 1 dynoed 5-speed car, other than yours. Tony's car is an auto and the auto seems to be brutal on our power. Also, no one seems to know how the CVTC helps the power curve, in theory it should help but no one has dynoed an 04 1.8 to know as far as I know.
PS. As far as your car is concerned, do you have an ETA when you'll be stripping it yet?

Nissans working on a new small 4 cylinder, it has the intake manifold toward the front of the motor and the exhaust toward the firewall like a K20A Honda. I don't know too much about them though.

i can only assume that this poll/petition is a dead issue now... too bad, i would really like to have seen this happen just to see how high we can tune a N/A qg18
been looking for more info on the CVTC and how it affects aftermarket Cams. Anyone know much about this issue? We're looking at Australian places to make cams for the QG and there's not too much straigh out info anywhere I've looked... yet
cheers

well, my QG18DE just has VTC and not CVTC, but I think it's just a matter of cam timing control......if you've got a nasty grind it shouldn't lope as much at idle as a stationary cam gear control, I think.

exactly, it works great with big cams.

Mike, how many people would it take on this petition to get JWT to make us a set of cams?
they need to sell 100 sets just to break even. For instance they have sold less than 10 sets of GA16 cams because Sentra people are too cheap, so they are gun shy about getting burned again.
I got them to make VE cams by getting 80 people to pledge that they would buy them as soon as they were avalivle.

This is a dead thread, but I want CAMS Badly!
Although the QG18 doesn't have the sheer numbers like the Honda boys do, we *do* have a strong following of hugely devoted enthusiasts.
100 sets? Heck I'm sure we can hit that # with all the dedicated B-15 Discussion Boards out there!

however I think the best way to do it is probably do a "non-refundable deposit" of something like $200, after the cams are tested. By a minimum of 20 people. That is, of course, if JWT agrees to make them if we do that.
