"Service engine soon" light is on for 2004 Sentra 1.8s
Hi, i'm new here so i searched the forums and didn't find a topic about this issue. sorry if this is a repost or something. hahha
As said in my thread title, my "service engine soon" light is on my sentra. at random times when i'm driving, the engine would just die out on me and shut down. i've researched about this problem on the internet and it seems to be a common problem. some have said that nissan had a recall back when this sentra was released. I went there today and there was no such thing. left before they could even charge me $95 for diagnostics. I don't have a diagnostics device. so i don't know the error code, but anyone might have an idea on whats wrong? the mileage on the car is reaching 60,000. friends that i have talked to, they said its the prime mileage for a tune up. I've changed my spark plugs this past June and belts last November. so they're still fairly new.
Sorry man, we don't have an autozone here in Hawaii. We've got checkers, but they recently stopped doing diagnostics ever since a new owner came. so yeah. sorry, people have been asking about the codes also, but i simply just dont have a scanner.
Step 1: There are well over 100 codes that will trigger the SES light. Scan tool runs round $100.
Probably NOT a tune-up issue, could be anything from a big thing to a small thing like a bad gas cap.
You don't need an AutoZone...many parts stores will either read the code for you or let you borrow/rent the scan tool. It's only a dignostic tool, it won't fix anything because even if you erase the code and the light goes off, the problem still exists
If you buy a scan tool, you'll have it and it will be good for any car after 1994.
Step 2: Once you read the code you have to figure out what it means, so buy a manual with all the codes listed. Then decide if it's something you can handle or if you need to take it to a shop. The shop, unless you know them, will still charge you for diagnostics.

Thanks.
Hey there. I just joined as well, which my submission of membership is due to the report i just received from the dealership.
I had a check engine light on as well, when i went to Advanced Autoparts, they told me it was P1148 and two P0420 codes. Naturally, i assume it's just the bank 1 AF sensor, but when i got the car fully diagnosed at the dealership, they found much..much.. more.
All things totalled, $1845 worth of issues, and combined with labor, over $3300 to get everything fixed.
So... anyone have a 2.5 laying around i could have?
Find out how much it costs to have the ECM reprogrammed with the latest updates first. There was a TSB on this even tho' the dealer is trying to deny it. If you can get that done at a decent price then I would do that and see if it gets rid of any of the codes or issues you're experiencing. Can't guarantee it will help but might be worth a shot.....

?
Of COURSE the dealer found more repairs necessary. They don't call them "stealerships" for nothing.
So, the first code P1148 is an O2 (AF) sensor code. It's probable that just replacing the sensor will fix that issue. Easy to do yourself.
The second, P0420, is also related to the O2 and the catalytic converter. It may be throwing that code because of the faulty Bank 1 sensor, which is causing your engine to run too rich and fugging up the cat.
...and find a decent independent mechanic that you can TRUST, the dealership thrives on finding "extra" stuff that needs fixing.
FYI that extra stuff is our JOB to let the customer know.........
Oh, I understand that. However, as a service to us "regular joes" it might be nice to tell us that we can fix a problem without breaking the bank.
Then we might start trusting the dealer instead of the idea that we'll get reamed just to fix a small issue. That's why the information is in "code". There's a big business to run, need more money.
When I'm quoted $700 to fix a $150 alternator it sure FEELS like a hand job. I'll gladly get under the car for a whole day to fix it. I don't make $550 a day.
Boo-Hoo for me!!
Having to wait for Tuesday to devote time and funds to this issue. If the check-engine light goes out, i'll be thrilled. And also, shall come back and post how a $30 component saved me $3270 for the time being.
I can get a 30,000 mile engine for less than that... Sure does seem like a racket...
