'02 Sentra GXE, MIL came on

Hi,

I have a '02 Sentra GXE, and the dreaded Service Engine Soon aka Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on 2 days ago.

I saw this post:
All you ever wanted to know about your Check Engine Light but were afraid to ask

and I have some questions...

Does the procedure to put the ECM in "Diagnostic Test Mode II" apply to the Sentra or only to the Altima? If it does apply to the Sentra, all engines, or just the 2.5? (I have the 1.8)

I have the service manual on CD, and I searched for "Diagnostic Test Mode II". While there is no shortage of references to it, the manual never comes out and says how to put the damn thing into that mode, and I'm wondering why....

Finally, I hope pressing the gas pedal so many times with the engine off doesn't damage anything, or am I living in the past and thinking about carburetors (now that dates me)...

Thanks,
Dan

why don't you just go to auto zone or somewhere like that, that will read your code for free? and no, that won't work on the 1.8

2 auto zones near me don't have service bays, just parts.

read the code for FREE? in new york city? you gotta be kidding. nobody does anything for free in nyc lol.

one gas station wants $70 and another wants $90. just to read the code. pep boys wants $20. looks like it's pep boys. by contrast, the emissions part of the NYS inspection, which is basically the same thing ... hook the computer up to the car and read the obdii ... is $10. but of course if i ask for emissions inspection they'll fail me, not due for one until july anyway.

i hear a lot of bad gas is being sold around here. but i won't know for sure until i get the code.

What scanners do you recommend?

Hey, just did a quick google of scanners, saw some for around $60 to $160. heck, one gas station wanted $70 and another wanted $90 just to read the code... at that rate, I should buy a scanner and rent it out lol....

anyhow, sentra gxe 1.8, what scanner do you guys recommend?

amazon is having a sale on the Actron CP9135 for $59.99

that's insane, no one does it for free.i wasn't talking about it getting fixed at auto zone, they just scan your code for you. i just had it done about a month ago.

OH!!!! You're right. I was going under the misconception that the Autozone has to offer service to get the code scanned. I was wrong. Any Autozone will do it for free. Code was P1444.
