Sentra '01 - Service Engine Soon
Hi All,
I recently bought a user car - A Nissan Sentra 2001- LE model.
Miles - 95400, Cost - $5500
I drove it for around 50 miles and a service engine light came on. I took it back to the dealer and he said he has fixed it after a couple of days. I got it back only to get the light back. Took it to the dealer who fixed it again and yet again after driving around 40 miles the light came on.
So in a period of around 40 days, I have taken it to the dealer 3 times. It passed safety inspection but failed emission inspection.
In all he has said he has changed the following during my 3 visits to him -
- Thermostat
- EGR Valve
- O2 Sensors
- Mass Air Flow Sensor
- And now he tells me that the catalytic convertor is not working efficiently and says it has to be changed.
When I asked him why did he not tell me that there was a problem with the catalytic convertor when I had taken it earlier, he said that the engine throws up one code at a time and when the defect for that code is cleared, the computer throws up the next one (If there is one)
The codes which have come in till now -
P1126
P0171
and now its P0420/P0430 (Not sure which one)
Now I am getting a little anxious and worried of what to do.
Some questions
1. Is this car worth it and good even if the dealer fixes it now?
2. Is the dealer telling the truth? - I mean does it come one code at a time?
3. Is it better to sell off the car and get a new one (I might lose the money I spent on registration if I go for a different car now).
4. Are these issues common to used cars? Or is it more common only to Nissan Sentra '01 LE models?
Thanks
SN
