I have a 2005 1.8 sentra and I keep having to add coolant, about every two weeks the reservoir is down to the min mark. I have inspected all hoses, radiator, thermostat housing, and have not found a leak. checked oil and it is clean, no white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I can tell it is low when
I hear water in the heater coil area of the dash, but no leaks inside of cab area. Also have not had an overheating problem. Any suggestions with this problem, thanx.
If your not having overheating problems, i would think it's just a leak problem in the overflow tank only. Do you have to add to the radiator directly as well?
the radiator is good I add coolant to the over flow only, but I am checking it all the time. Also my check engine light have started to come on then go back out and the code says the #1 cylinder is misfiring. I took out the spark plug and the ignitor part of the plug looks good but there is a white powdery residue on the part of the plug thats goes to the core pack and the same residue is in the cylinder also. Coould this be where the coolant is leaking into.
Sorry, newbie here. Can't see how to post except as a response.
Just bought an '03 Sentra GXE 500 miles away from home (long story.) Within a few miles, I thought I smelled coolant, but only faintly and not even sure, might have been the Armor All. About 200 miles into trip, going up and down mountains in cruise control at high speed (lots of down shifting for Auto tranny), sudden overheat. This was preceeded by cruise control going out, light blinking for 10 minutes, or so. Cab filled with overheat mist after shut off. Not much leakage at all. Waited for cool engine, read factory manual in glove box. Said something about not using cruise control like I did in mountains. Ran car with heater cranked for 20 min. to gas station. Added about a quart of coolant. Ran car normally, with more caution re. cruise control. Still think I smell coolant. None in oil that I can see, no oil in coolant that I can see. No more troubles over last 250 miles.
Head gasket leaking only slightly till coolant is low enough to overheat?
It's weird to me that it was a sudden overheat.
Maybe used car with a head gasket sealant repair job and some chunk temporarily blocked thermostat?
Bought from potentially shady used car dealer.
the 1.8's have A LOT of issues with head gaskets. just because your car isn't overheating doesn't mean you don't have a hole in it. it's pretty common, even if it's a small crack.
if you want to be sure it's your headgasket have a shop perform a leakdown test or get an oil analysis.
hey all, i am a nissan tech, and you most likely have your head gasket leaking, its not going to show up on the blcok test because most of the time the 1.8 and 2.5 leak coolant from the edge of the gasket down the engine, not into a cylinder causeing white smoke, get a flash light and look for coolant traces around your head =D
these are good cars its just how you take care of them, its alot of little things that count too, especially changing your oil on time every time, using quality parts, not kragen or autozone, pepboys, bla bla bla you get the picture. oem dealer parts are worth the little bit extra you have to pay for them. if you want your sentra to last just do your routine maintenance, do not use long life coolant, as it tends to eat gaskets, try to stay away from cooling system additives, they like to eat water pumps and gaskets as well. take care of your car like it was your child and youll be a happy camper for the most part =), unless of course you bought a domestic car, then your pretty much fucked =)
Thanks. Any suggestions on where to go for good shop manual? Is there a good free one? I'm looking for the one on changing that head gasket, especially.
