service engine light

I have a 2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8L with 24,000 miles. For the past couple weeks it has not started the first time I turn the ignition, but would usually start the second time when giving it a little gas. Last night it took me three tries to get it started and then the "service engine light" came on. I checked the engine and noticed a clicking sound that I don't recall hearing before. Does this seem like a fuel filter problem?
